Samsung engineers would be hired by Apple Austin (I suppose).
It isnt a layoff if they are offered other positions in a different location. Many companies do that for restructure sake
The design engineers all got snatched up. We made about 10 offers but none accepted.
Which company?
I am a part of that Samsung team. We were offered generous severance, also paid our bonus and cashed out all the PTO. Most of us had multiple offers and we got good hikes too so there is nothing bad that came out of this. All of us make good $$$.
Companies go through restructuring. Fact of the matter is the roi from investment in hardware continue to reduce. We are kind of at the point where we are squeezing all performance so realistically paying wages for researching how to make hardware better in USA doesnāt make sense for them
Google, FB, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and so many more were software companies and they are selling hardware now. A lot of new startups are doing AI chips.
All the ones that you mentioned are betting except fb are betting big on cloud. Sure that creates hardware opportunities but still is largely an expense. You are right Ai chips are rising. But my view is we have squeezed a lot of performance out of hardware. Next step might be making molecular level transistors but actually scaling their production likely will take a decade or so. I am not saying hardware is dead. Itās just not the most in thing right now.
