My sister works at Fb and she was an interviewer on a loop for an E5 candidate. 3 out of 4 interviewers were new to the interview process. Coding questions were LC medium and they all mentioned (in the feedback) that the code had bugs in it and the person struggled to code. He didn't finish the code in any of them. They all (except my sister) voted for hire "because he got the idea". And they gave him an offer. This is so unfair. They didn't even let me interview for E5 because I had less than 6 yoe, while they gave this guy an offer, simply because the interviewers had no clue about the bar. Just wanted to vent out :(
If it helps, I did not get an offer despite correctly solving all their LC meds.
This sounds fishy. I think E5 has really high bar.
I thought so, but after this now I understand why FB has PIP.
The recruiter kept refusing to give me an interview for E5, because of my yoe, and gave this guy a loop because he had 10 yoe, while he definitely wasn't able to solve a few LC medium.
Hold my beer while I call you a Wambulance
Just saying leet coding doesn't mean you're a good engineer, means you can pull all nighters constantly.
True, but if a person can't covert the idea to code after 10 yoe, he's definitely not a good engineer. It's not about LC.
This is usually the case if someone is a new interviewer. They tend to be more lenient in feedback. Did this not go to debrief? If It did, your sister should have been more adamant in her feedback. I’ve conducted 100s of interviews at FB and I’ve see many cases of 3 Yes and 1 No getting rejected due to soft feedback.
It did go to debrief, but they outvoted her by "but he got the idea". I mean sure, getting the idea is necessary, but so is converting it to working code.
He must have worked at really good companies before
Yikes.
Why should more experienced candidates only look at leetcode performance ?
Nobody said only. Being able to convert the idea to code is a necessity for E5. It's not the only thing, but it's necessary, i.e. if you can't do it, you shouldn't be in.
This industry's hiring is all yoe based. Tech is so fragmented that it is the only major criteria. Sorry but its the truth
Your sister is trying to make you feel better. Lol. Yes, luck always plays a part, but still hard to believe the story,
whaat is this how people are getting offers at fb?
A lot of it is straight up luck. You could do great and if your interviewer is having a bad day, L
True, luck is playing a big role. I hate it:(
