Scammed on eBay

A seller insisted I paid bitcoin and seemed to have a good rating so I trusted them then found out next day a seller account had been compromised and the person I was talking to was not who it should be . I know it was dumb to not use PayPal but honestly are you supposed to Question every seller on eBay . Fuck . I was scammed out over 5000 dollars in bitcoin and litecoin. eBay said they could do nothing . I hope someone finds this guy some day so I can get my money back . Never use eBay again. Each miner I was trying to buy was around 2500 and 2700.

If bitcoin is traceable someone find this ahole.

This could have been avoided if eBay has 2 factor authentication . How do they not have that ... what a scam platform ....

Ebay says since I did not use PayPal and was tricked by a compromised account that didn’t 2 factor authenticate that it is all my fault. Here’s hoping someone knows how to work backwards to find this guy.

Also hoping a higher up in ebay reads this and helps me to make this right . I can give my seller details cause ebay desperately needs 2 factor authentication.

So from my experience this is how I learned you must use eBay.

1) if a deal is too good to be true you may want Check the following :
- is the seller rating good .
- question is the seller really the owner of the account who claims to have this good rating.
- does the seller have a history of selling items and do they have feedback related to selling .
In general ebay feedback rating s combination of buying history and selling history. In my case this has been an eBay member for 19 years but started selling two weeks ago.
- is the PayPal address I am sending to look like Chinese ?

Now tell me how Ebay has turned them platform into this ... it truly is 99.9 percent scam.

I have used eBay for over 20 years and never been scammed till now . Please share this to eBay president ceo. There is change needed now.

Even if a seller had 100% rating from tens of thousands of people you should never trust them with so much money, especially out of e-Bay's protected payment system (paypal).

Sorry but it is your responsibility to know the limitations and policies of the platform you are using.

I don't even trust Amazon when buying certain things like fragrance as they are almost always of less quality than what you buy at local stores like Macy's or Nordstrom.

But there are other platforms where you don’t have to do this trust game bullshit. You shouldn’t have to question who you are dealing with . It’s stupid that’s why you trust a platform . I have been a long time buyer on eBay .

You went off-platform with your payment and expect eBay to help you? eBay clearly says not to accept payments or perform payments outside of the designated process because of this very issue

eBay does have 2FA lol. Maybe we should do a better job of coaxing the user to enable it, but eBay has 2FA.

I’m sure if you bought an item from a third-party seller on Amazon, paid off-platform, and then they scammed you you’d get the same result

Because it is working as designed? Crypto is the same as cash. Once you hand it over, it is no longer yours.

I wouldn't give over $5k to somebody I cannot verify on the promise of getting something from them next week. I would pay for an escrow service or in something that could be reversed later if they don't follow through.

Wasn’t Blockchain supposed to remove the need for a trust broker?

If you are exchanging the goods or service at the same time as making the payment you don't need a trust broker.

In this case, it was not simultaneous.

By definition payment typically follows service.

      Scenario 1
      1. I ask an artist to draw me an image
      2. They do so and fedex it to me.
      3. Then I refuse to pay.

      Scenario 2
      1. I ask an artist to draw me an image
      2. I send them the payment
      3. Then they refuse to draw.

      How does Blockchain remedy either?

That is where smart contracts can help. But if all you are doing is a straight transaction that mirrors handing cash over, there isn't any protections built in.

If you wouldn't hand cash over in the same situation, don't send Bitcoin (or any other crypto).

In the scenario given, use a smart contact for escrow - but you will need a third party arbitrator unless it is being sent digitally - in which case it could be handled through the contract to verify that something was sent before releasing the funds.

Blockchain improved the payment side, by providing a way to prove the buyer does have the required funds without giving up their privacy - and can prove a transaction occurred.

It does not change human nature. Things like escrow companies and debt collectors and civil courts all exist for reasons, and they will still need to exist after crypto is mature.

Right. It really just means you don't need to use another organization (a bank using government backed currency) to send funds. You can do it pseudonymously and verify it happened on your own - and it cannot be undone.

I would love to raise awareness that if ebay account get hacked say someone knew your password to login they can just do it and eBay is not checking if the logon comes from a authorized device country etc it does no pattern match and just allows the attacker to have access. I want ebay to change this they should have some basic checks like IP address or authorized devices so that when someone takes over an account they are 2 factor authenticated using special codes texted to device. Is anyone shocked eBay does not do this ?

I’m not sure what you’re asking but basically I’m hearing:

I have financial information saved on a site but I did not enable 2FA and got hacked.

Company should have done more. Though I didn’t do the basics?

      Is that it, pretty much?

No you have people that hack seller account impersonate the seller and message people trying to get them to play into fraud . I am asking ebay to provide 2 factor authentication for suspicious logon.

      1. Read the reviews to see if the person delivers on sales
      2. Use PayPal (as a trust broker) or any credit card and you get your money back

      All you lose is time.

As you (already) know, Amazon Marketplace had this issue throughout the whole end of last year too.

I always got my money back.

FYI: Though this happened at least 5 times to me on Amazon, I don’t consider them a scam platform.
