“Isn’t school for learning math and science and reading,” [our son] asked us one day, “not for teachers to tell us what to think about society?” Make that TC to homeschool your kids with proper tutors: give them the highest advantage in an increasingly woke and stupid world https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/10/when-the-culture-war-comes-for-the-kids/596668/
Couple of things that made me lol . "Sustainable arts studio" and staying married as a compromise. And yes, NYC schools are rather be bad. One thing tho. What's this obsession for arts? During downturns a la 2008 arts related professions suffer more as people have less disposable income. And as for what's considered art nowadays and what pays it's highly debatable. Is Cardy B. cultured for example?
Just because you don’t like art doesn’t make it irrelevant. I suppose you don’t watch movies or listen to music?
I'm not saying it's irrelevant. I'm just stating facts. I'm also saying what you and me consider art is very subjective, therefore it shouldn't have a mandatory 30000$/year price tag, even more so when many of the front runners you see on TV or listen to, have spent zero on formal art education while in the school system. The bigger issue is that in order to accommodate comprehensive art programs in schools that early, other stuff like geography had to be taken out. Why do you think there's a proliferation of flat earthers lately?
I tell my kids socialism is evil, Democrats want to take your money and Trump is the greatest president of all time. It works.
My husband and I are planning our whole lives/careers around being able to hire private tutors for the kids
Make sure you get that kid involved in the community. Some homeschool kids end up pretty strange.
School is for academics. There is a reason why schools in Asian heavy places are usually highly rated.
Thanks for the share. That was a riveting read, no kidding. I'm not at all looking forward to dealing with this whole ordeal a few years from now as my wife and I are planning our first child next year. She's a liberal teacher married to a libertarian engineer, this will be fun.
Lol that’s gonna be fun for you
You don't have to be like the sissy in the article at all. Kiddie academy and then public school for my kids. Most important are you, the parents. Set them up for success and encourage them and give them love. The goal is to nurture good, well adjusted individuals. This hyper competitive stuff is just a bunch of bullshit and frankly un-American. This isn't Japan. This isn't China or India. This is America and people have the right to pursue happiness, including children.
Great read! In fact it actually holds an opinion against meritocracy instead of for it. It’s true though. Equality of opportunity has always been a myth when it comes to USA.
I read something a while ago showing upward mobility on society is better in Europe than the US... Even though they still have inherited Fuedal titles!
One of the few things that I think is messed up in the US is the school curriculum politics ! In India and other Asian countries, school curriculum is not about unhelpful debates about evolution etc, but achieving academic success, especially in Math and science. This is so much more useful to develop your math skills than arguing about political opinions
This is a great article! I didn't realize NYC is like this on a lot of ways. Is the Bay area like this too at all?

You are right. What a stupid idea it is to teach kids in school about sharing, being kind, helping less fortunate, collaborating or simply doing the right thing. Instead they should each be taken aside and taught they are unique snowflakes and only their opinion matters.
