Friend is waiting for scientist offer from Genentech. As far as I understand the position in terms of responsibilities is similar to assistant professor in academy. I couldn't find any clear information about expected TC on blind. And Glassdoor numbers are usually not accurate (it says 130k is a salary which seems low as fuck for someone with PhD and almost 5-10 yrs post-phd in academy). Does anyone have insights into it? TC ranges for scientist, senior scientist? It seems weird that fang folks are so open (ok, at least anonymously) about their comp and nobody from Genentech is willing to share the information.
Know multiple people working under healthcare industry. It has a reputation to only pay well for educated medical personnel. Don't know about Genentech, but scientific lab and reaserch work doesn't pay nearly as well as tech. Number seems ok, though no harm in your friend looking for other offers to negotiate with
It's fucking science and fucking biology what do you expect? TC is shit there. There is a supply side imbalance of too many biologists and biotech/pharma business model is bleeding money. Bad supply demand dynamics and no profitability... What do you think will happen? Tech rules!!! Seriously don't hang out with science/biology. They're a bunch of low TC losers who believe in not earning high TC and preach their ethos of doing valuable work. It's like a fucking cult in that industry. Of course the executives make a boat ton of money. It's just pure exploitation of stupid PhD holders. Your friend is one of them, and if you were a good friend you would tell that to his/her face. The numbers quoted are believable. Usually senior makes no more than $150k. Middle management or principal is $150-200k. Director level is low $200k I think. And promotion is slow like fuck. FYI asst prof earns about $100k.
Thanks for your replies folks

Tech industry pays high, not all industries. Healthcare pays pretty low, so that number seems kinda ok to me. I know a senior manager at Genentech gets 150k TC. Also, Genentech is among the highest payers in healthcare, maybe because it's in the Bay unlike most other healthcare companies which are in cheaper areas on the east coast. You would be surprised to know that getting to that 6-figure mark is still a thing in most industries.
