Second hand electric car for commute?

I’m thinking of buying an electric car for daily commute, but I’m still exploring benefits and costs. Since this is a second car, I’m looking to minimize costs.. I could get a Nissan Leaf used maybe 2010-13 model. Or one of those tiny 2 seat cars that are easy to park on the street (though I’m scared about safety being in those tiny cars in case I was rear ended in traffic by a heavier vehicle?). I’m in the Bay Area (CA) and am also exploring the state credits/benefits. Others who were in similar boat - what did you get and why?

U wont get carpool lane. Elec cars get it for their first 4 yrs

Even for new purchase of a used car?

Microsoft HINs46 Oct 16, 2018

Else wise, the access is infinite if the car is keep being traded.

Apple GinTonic Oct 16, 2018

There’s a new rule for carpool in the Bay Area where you can get red stickers. But only some cars qualify. If that doesn’t matter to you, get whatever. I have a small elec that I got leased for a good price, and it’s been just fine

Which one did you get? Do they lease used cars too?

Apple GinTonic Oct 16, 2018

I have a Spark. I’m not sure about lease on used cars.

What's ur budget? Second hand cars are cheap but u won't get tax credits as dealer or first owner.might have used it; and that's why it is cheaper for u

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

I can go up to $15-20k but would prefer cheaper. Lease is even better.

Salesforce Gjjdhjekej Oct 16, 2018

If u r buying for long term. I would say better range and current best model is good bet as technology is changing very rapidly

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

Oh ok, so you think I should wait till 2019’s best new models are out?

Salesforce Gjjdhjekej Oct 16, 2018

2018 Leaf is good. But leasing or buying it might not be good for.long term. Leasing - u just throw 7-9k.for 3 years

If you have used a phone, you might have noticed that after a year the battery doesn't hold as much charge as it was new, same is true for electric cars.

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

Can I not get a new battery for a used electric car?

Amazon Quietroom Oct 16, 2018

Don’t bother with a new battery. It’s usually almost the price of a new car.

I'm leasing Nissan leaf. Basic model starts at around $250/month. It's not a tiny car, unless you compare with some kind if truck. Their recent model has a longer range + you get a Charge point card to charge for free at many locations. As a small perk, you also get nice parking spots :)

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

Yeah parking spots at work is a good win. Is it $250/month for a brand new car?

Microsoft kvitka. Oct 16, 2018

Yep, for the new model, after all the rebates + there is a discount for Microsoft (Facebook might have one too). I'm in Seattle area though.

Amazon Quietroom Oct 16, 2018

I have a used leaf and love it. They are cheap. It’s a great car if the range works with your lifestyle. (I use it for city driving only and rarely wish that I had more range.)

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

It should be able to do 30-50 miles per day right?

Microsoft anaya Oct 16, 2018

If you really enjoy driving slow in the left lane then the Prius or Leaf is for you!

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

Lol do they drive slow because they’re hybrids and faster speeds will switch to gas mode?

Microsoft nonillion Oct 16, 2018

They drive slow because they don't understand the concepts of a passing lane

Microsoft King’s👑 Oct 16, 2018

If you’re OK with a limited range for your commuter car you can consider this option if it’s still available: https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2018-05-14/how-to-lease-a-50-000-bmw-for-less-than-a-subway-pass

Facebook Tyfd OP Oct 16, 2018

Oh wow!! I’ll keep looking out for deals on that website, thanks!

Microsoft JormNuda Oct 16, 2018

BMW i3. With REX you have no range anxiety and it's just a nicer car than leaf. Used 2014 and now 15's are coming off of leases so there are more available. 20K for a REX, 17K for all electric
