Second hand electric car for commute?

I’m thinking of buying an electric car for daily commute, but I’m still exploring benefits and costs. Since this is a second car, I’m looking to minimize costs..

I could get a Nissan Leaf used maybe 2010-13 model. Or one of those tiny 2 seat cars that are easy to park on the street (though I’m scared about safety being in those tiny cars in case I was rear ended in traffic by a heavier vehicle?).

I’m in the Bay Area (CA) and am also exploring the state credits/benefits.

Others who were in similar boat - what did you get and why?

If you have used a phone, you might have noticed that after a year the battery doesn't hold as much charge as it was new, same is true for electric cars.

EV depreciate because no more incentive and rebates for used EV. There you see a sharp depreciate on day 1, then flat for years.
Let me Google it for you: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1110149_tesla-model-s-battery-life-what-the-data-show-so-far
95% capacity remains after 150,000km . That's quite "some" charge.

Yeah the article doesn't talk about time, which is the bigger factor, as clearly visible in the statement:
...the earliest Nissan Leafs now appear to have lost up to half their battery capacity, with drivers finding their range has fallen below 50 miles of real-world use...

      Data or gtfo.
I've talked about leaf above. Early leaf have poor BMS and that's the consequence we see. Liquid cooled battery from same year are working just fine.

Ok, I’ll check for liquid cooled battery management systems. Btw, someone suggested buy used electric car out of state and bring it to CA. Would that give me a carpool lane and CA credits?

I'm leasing Nissan leaf. Basic model starts at around $250/month. It's not a tiny car, unless you compare with some kind if truck. Their recent model has a longer range + you get a Charge point card to charge for free at many locations. As a small perk, you also get nice parking spots :)

Yes my friend also leased a fiat compact car for less than 200 a month. Leasing is a very good option you can explore

Also, I’ll need to buy some sort of charging unit for my garage?

I just leased Leaf 2018, and it comes with a free charger. I did buy one during my previous leases. Though I have a charger, I rarely use it. I have Nissan dealership near home - quick charge there takes around 20 mins, or I charge at work.

L2 charger at home are good but not required. You can use the L1 charger and charge overnight.
Yet, ask an electrician the cost to add an 240v socket in your garage. Might not be that high.

If you really enjoy driving slow in the left lane then the Prius or Leaf is for you!

Lol do they drive slow because they’re hybrids and faster speeds will switch to gas mode?

They drive slow because they don't understand the concepts of a passing lane

It's ok to drive slow, but WAKE UP and move to the side so others can go around you. It's usually clueless people who are selfish and inconsiderate

If u r buying for long term. I would say better range and current best model is good bet as technology is changing very rapidly

Leaf is good. But leasing or buying it might not be good for.long term. Leasing - u just throw 7-9k.for 3 years

Check 3year old Nissan leaf car peixes. If u like it then u should be finr

  • U wont get carpool lane. Elec cars get it for their first 4 yrs

Else wise, the access is infinite if the car is keep being traded.

Well it can be limited based on ownership duration, e.g. 4 years per person no matter what you buy or sell. Isn’t that fairer?

Stay away from a Nissan Leaf, the battery degrades like crazy! I had one (2013 year) and never was able to drive comfortably more than 60 miles on one charge. I have a Chevy Volt now and could not be happier!

Someone above said that it was due to old version of battery management system in older Leafs that were air cooled. The newer liquid cooled ones don’t have battery issues?

If you’re OK with a limited range for your commuter car you can consider this option if it’s still available:

I have a used leaf and love it. They are cheap. It’s a great car if the range works with your lifestyle. (I use it for city driving only and rarely wish that I had more range.)

What's ur budget? Second hand cars are cheap but u won't get tax credits as dealer or first owner.might have used it; and that's why it is cheaper for u

BMW i3. With REX you have no range anxiety and it's just a nicer car than leaf. Used 2014 and now 15's are coming off of leases so there are more available. 20K for a REX, 17K for all electric

There’s a new rule for carpool in the Bay Area where you can get red stickers. But only some cars qualify.

If that doesn’t matter to you, get whatever. I have a small elec that I got leased for a good price, and it’s been just fine
