I got asked if I wanted to get a security clearance and join the air gapped government portion of AWS. Should I do it? It comes with a 20K annual bonus just for having it.
20K(pretax) is not worth the hassle. Think long term, you can't even talk about your work experience in your interviews.
Oh good point. I wonder how that works.
I wouldn't, it seems like such a hassle and also limiting in your lifestyle choices. Depending on the level of clearance, international travelling might be limited, no weed, foreign investments become more difficult, etc.
Why not? Job security
What level clearance does it require? If it’s just a secret then I’d go for it. 80% of your job will be unclassified so you will be able to speak about plenty in future interview. For my clearance I just had to fill out the SF86 form and they did some interviews with the people I put as references. It’s really about 3-4 days Of filling the form out and then about 6 months of waiting. Unless it’s TSSCI there shouldn’t be anything to worry about with the process really. If you get to that level some compartments require a polygraph but secret and too secret shouldn’t.
All correct, follow this advice.
No. The second you have a clearance every company that does any sort of govt contracting attempts to pigeon hole you into contracting work. Spent 4 years trying to get rid of my clearance and have this far been completely unsuccessful
Couldn’t you apply to a company like Uber or Walmart that doesn’t have clearance roles?
Sure and I’ve gotten away from it successfully multiple times only to have my upper management come and ask if I can help part time on this contract of that contract. I just accepted a new job partially because that very thing had just happened again.
Nah if you want more money leave amazon
What level? TS w/ poly definitely not worth it for only $20k/yr extra. Maybe for three or four times that. Unless you grab it and jump ship to something that pays better for it.
I heard you could get upto 35k based on the clearance level. Is that correct?
What did you end up doing?

I don’t have one and I’ve heard the process is intense. A simple question for anyone with experience is innocent. Sounds like you don’t know what you are talking about and are ignorantly cautious.
