Hi blinders,

Seeking your opinions on doing MS in US (CS) from the perspective of future growth and earning potential given the cost (expenditure + unrealised earnings in 2 years). I am a BTech in Chemical Engineering (with a Minor in CS) from an old IIT, pursuing a career in tech. I feel I have solid knowledge of CS fundamentals but not much hands on experience.

Currently Working as L4 Applied Scientist (ML) at Amazon India.

TC: 30LPA (18+12)
YOE: 2

Almost of my friends make around this, a few even make upto 1.5x with same experience. I think the pay in SWE is getting much better than it used to be a couple of years back, the startup boom and exploding valuations have helped the SW sector at least.

I’ve seen people taking 1.5-2 yrs to grow to L5 in Applied Science and then you need to stay for another year before you’re eligible for internal transfer. I got promoted to Applied scientist (was L4 earlier too) only 3 months back.
