Seeking advice: Any Software Engineer here transitioned into Machine Learning Engineer?

I am an SE pursuing part time masters in AI specialization. My reason to select AI focused degree is not to immediately jump the ship, but to upgrade myself (and I don't want to do just another degree on almost same SE principles).
I wonder how ML engineering looks like these days.

1. Does it worth the transition as of you engineers in terms of work and satisfaction?

2. In terms of compensation does it make much difference? (I am not considering the phd 'scientists' compensation range)

Thanks!

I did the opposite. More options available for SDEs. Comp is the same.

Interesting! What made you to switch?
Got bored of preparing data, tune to next 0.1%, etc?

Yep, pretty much. Less urgent projects. More working hard for something that doesn’t necessarily improve the customer experience, fewer job options, got sick of interviews that expected you to be an SDE *and* an expert in ML, etc.

What I do know, is that they all start at lvl4 and peak at lvl5 where they stay unless they become manager, which none of them ever do.. they are very junior and highly dependent on other roles in the org to do their job... they all seem very much broke....

I don’t have a PhD but I’ve been teaching, training and mentoring PhDs ever since I joined Amazon, PhD might be useful if you want to get a first job with amazon straight out of university, but later on in your career it’s completely useless, and not a differentiator in any way....
