Does it make difference to sell stocks if you have a student visa or H1b? I understand long term gain(20%) vs short term gain(40%) but does social security and Medicare taxes plays any part in taxes on selling RSU's, which a employee working on a student visa doesn't pay?
Social security and medicare payroll taxes don’t factor when you sell stock for capital gains (even for residents), only when they vest and it’s delivered as income. You still need to pay taxes on gains. I thought there is a 30% flat tax for nonresident alien students cap gains for F / J / M visa?
I am not sure if it's a flat rate.
