Has anyone thought about moving to Singapore from US and semi retire there? By semi retire, I mean having a low stress tech job to get some basic insurance coverage and to not get bored. How’s TC there? How much money do you need to FIRE in Singapore? Is 2M USD good enough?
This site seems interesting: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Singapore&country2=United+States&city1=Singapore&city2=San+Francisco%2C+CA It’s suggesting overall SF is 21% more expensive than Singapore.
What is it about Singapore that drives you to live there? Have you been before? A Honda Accord will cost you ~$120k. You will also need to gain permanent residency to be able to get access to a lot of housing. Otherwise it can be very expensive. Summer is extremely humid and hot. Singapore’s culture is also very fast-paced and demanding. I am not sure you would fare well in employment there with a laid-back attitude. I think there are far better places to aim to retire early with an easier tech job than there. Why not a low-end tech job in Florida? Or if you’re okay with the less-developed world, Brazil has a pretty great tech scene. 2M should be enough to get you by in either place.
2 of my friends have gone to Singapore from MS. One has gone in Indeed and other in Grab. 2bhk full furnished government apartment will cost 2k rent pm. If u need condo with amenities 2500 rent pm. Public transport is dirt cheap. Hardly 50-80Sgd a month to n fro in bus or train. They both are Indian and cook at home so hardly 1k for grocery and 1200sgd for kids school fee. 1k misc. Rest all is savings for them. They r liking it so far. Only weather is the concern.
Did they get PR or expats?
Undoubtedly, Singapore is not a good place to retire. It’s expensive and a low stress job might be difficult to find. It’s a great stepping stone, but after a year or two you’ll be very bored. It’s a small island. Unless it has to be Asia, I’d consider New Zealand or Australia.
Definitely AU/NZ. Laid back culture, good weather, universal health care (you don’t really need insurance at all). Pretty good all round!
Definitely not a good place to retire. More like a transitive career step at best, spend a few years based there in order to travel around and then get out.
Bora Bora island. Buy a shack, sell cocktails, enjoy
But shacks are quite expensive on Bora Bora. Anyway, If you get bored with selling cocktails, you can work remotely 😉
They work you very hard in Singapore.
Terrible place to retire unless you want to have a side gig driving Grab.
become a tourist guide there

Singapore is one of the expensive City. Are you sure 2M is enough? Owing a house or car is not affordable.
