I have more than 10 years of experience working at a variety of companies. Senior SWE is a wide band and I am on the higher end of it with my compensation and technical skills. I hear that Linkedin’s Staff matches to Google L5. I hear some people say that even strong Senior SWE maps to that. Is that correct or I would need to do exceptionally well to get L5 at Google ? Thanks Also what would be the cap on total compensation for Google L4/L5 levels ? My total comp at Linkedin is about 400k (thanks to MSFT stock doing well but i am hitting a cliff soon).
Also Google is going to look at your signal during interview a lot, L5 is tech lead so basically flawless coding and system design with close to 0 hints, otherwise they will downlevel.
What do you mean by “look at your signal”?
How well you perform in the interview. It doesnt matter if you were senior staff at Linkedin they are going to expect you to code at L4 level for algo/ds, basically flawless with no hints L5 level for system design which means very good. Your target level is determined by your recruiter but your interview completely defines which level and at level like L5 most people are downlevelled to L4 because they dont show enough signal in the interview of technichal skill.
You can apply for L5 level, but make sure you tell recruiters upfront that you will not join at L4 (also Google can’t match that comp at L4 regardless). Additionally, have competitive offer from fb/netflix/twitter/snap or some other high paying place with an better offer for negotiation. Otherwise you will be lawballed (current comp doesn’t matter).

For level mapping visit levels.fyi For compensation I think L4 compensation tops around $370k and L5 around $450k. But getting the very high end is very exceptional
