Senior Solution Architect vs Senior Technical Account Manager

Hey All, I was interviewing with Amazon about Senior Solution Architect role then after the final round they told me the feedback was not to move forward but they think I'm fit in Senior Technical Account Manager. can I know the TC for both so I can compare if I need to move forward to apply for another Senior solution architect role at Amazon.

I should switch from sde to tam. Easier job for better pay

Amazon jassyandy Aug 27, 2019

Yes that's how I switched

Amazon kawahi Aug 27, 2019

I’m contemplating it now

TC is similar, SA is more technical TAM is more program management and first level of support

Amazon jassyandy Aug 27, 2019

It depends actually , you can choose whichever way you wanted it to be. Tam job doesn't have strict boundaries. Seen people doing lot of management and strategy stuff as well seen people doing crazy tech stuff and saving , kicking SA ass too. It's upto you , how you wanted to drive your career

TAM is not first level support at all. CSA/CSE are support but TAMs can assist them but CSA/CSEs are the experts. As TAMs we are escalation point for the customer and manage the customer relations through a case and help CSA/CSE escalating cases. This is like 10% of our job. My % of time as a TAM with ES customers ~10% of your time is doing support work ~25% of your time is doing SA work ~20% of your time is doing tech deep drives ~20% of you time is helping the customer with strategic initiatives ~25% of your time is providing the customer with insights and recommendations to improve operational excellence, security, cost savings, governance, etc (think Well-Architected Framework) Also note there are some things my SA is an experts on and I defer those topics to them if it’s beyond my knowledge and then there are others that I am an expert on and the SA just defers those topics to me if it’s past their knowledge.

Usually you are found “fit” for a lesser job title with lower comp, though you will be solving the very same problem. (At least they told you this, rather than simply changing your job title after the fact. Has happened.) Good luck!

Amazon jassyandy Aug 27, 2019

They do it all the time , not new

Amazon MickyB Aug 27, 2019

Go for TAM, SA job really sucks. No clear job definitions , long working hours and too many things to do. Less money but you'll be less miserable.

Amazon jassyandy Aug 27, 2019

true , SA job has lot of travel and too many customer to handle. The biggest issue I hear is to have 200 level knowledge on every service , but still get Specialist SA assigned to cater 300+ level conversations. Either be a TAM or Specialist SA, still Specialist SA will have lot of travel too. If you don't like any travel , TAM job is the best. Both SA and Proserv has travel. You might earn like 20k less being a TAM, but have life with good wlb and flexibility

Amazon jassyandy Sep 4, 2019

No it's not bad definitely, you have flexibility and good wlb and little more money but travel is the only catch. Depending on your customer assignment and your location the travel depends. If you are in prime locations like NY, SFO, Seattle , Chicago, Minneapolis wher your customers are around you won't leave the city for travel. Are you transitioning from dev to sa?

Same happened to me. I waited a month and then interviewed for another team and passed the loop. Now I’m an SA. Don’t settle for TAM unless you want to work in support in professional services. The “bar” is at different levels for different SA teams
