So I'm nearing 10 YOE with a focus on DevOps + Linux Infra + Networking + Site Reliability/Monitoring. With the advent of software defined datacenters, infrastructure as code, and the plethora of other automation concepts that come with the territory, I'd like to think I've got a solid grasp on some good development practices. My biggest concern is I feel like the transition is near impossible as my TC (~140k) is pretty high to onboard as an associate or junior developer in the midwest. So the result would be a short term pay loss but potentially more opportunities as development work is more abundant. I know full stack developers are a thing and perhaps that would be a good fit? I feel like my years of experience in my current role + gaining proficiency in a language would go a pretty good distance. Has anyone from the Operations realm successfully moved over? What was your strategy? PS. If you need a SRE/DevOps nerd, I'm hunting so shoot that PM my way :)
I am an embedded engineer and looking to shift to full stack developer. I am in Bay area. My research so far has been that you can get a senior position . The full stack developer salaries are much higher so you don't have to compromise on pay.
Find a squad that wants it's devs to do their own devops. A lot of squads I know are moving in that direction. Then you can get in at your current level and start dipping your toes into Dev work.
This. Very common these days.

You could consider moving to the Bay for a couple of years. Companies there should be open to recruiting you at atleast an SDE 2 level at an even higher salary than your current one. Then with that experience perhaps move back 2 years later to the mid-West if you want?
Relo is out of the equation currently. This would be a solid idea otherwise!
