Earlier I was thinking of a 15 day notice period. That's a norm here at Salesforce or may be that's what I have heard so far. But with all the planning for next 3 months is being done this week, I am thinking to let my manager know that I will be leaving in between so that the team can plan better. Has anyone given a 30 day notice before? The relations with my manager and skip manager are good and I don't think they will fire me, if I let them know before.
Only if your boss is a very good “actual” friend...otherwise, keep it to 2 weeks.
Done a month or more before. Wrap things up and transition to new people. Bay area is a small place, and last impressions are memorable, recency bias.
I gave Salesforce 30 day notice. I had good relationship with my team and manager, and still led the release planning as scrum master even though I quit later that week.
They fire you on a moments notice, you should do the same. Give notice day of. It’s legal. Marissa Mayer did it.
Legal doesn’t mean you should do it. Then future employers can legally use that against you in future employment situations.
I had an employer fire a coworker with no notice, so when I left I only gave them 3 days...they would have gotten no notice, but they tried to get me to fly out of town, so I had to let it out. I never referred that one either, I got to talk to my VP during the exit interview, he wanted the real story, so I gave it to him...later that day my boss came by and apologized to me...hehe, some one got their ass chewed out I was guessing.
I’ve given 6 weeks notice twice when the management begged me to stay and I offered to help hire my replacement. They saw that as a generous offer and didn’t walk me out. Both times I hired a qualified replacement and even had a week to train him. The two managers gave me extra cash as a reward. Everyone came out smelling like roses.
And how do you approach your manager with this news. In a polite manner.
It was an inconvenience to me because I was relocating and had to adjust my plans accordingly. The way I would bring it up is that you want to leave at a *natural* stopping point when you are between projects. Not much in the way of handoffs needed and you help the team get across the finish line for a milestone. I found employers are grateful when being considerate that way.
Totally depends on relationship with company/manager and how replaceable you are.
Let’s get rid of this whole 2 week courtesy bullshit. When the layoffs come soon these tech companies will not be giving you a two week notice. If you know you are leaving you have already mentally checked out, let’s just give a few days or at most a week notice. That way you can get on with your life and take a vacation before you start your next job instead of dragging out ur current job for another 2 weeks..
Agree about the mentally checked out part. But don't layoffs come with severance, which in effect is an advanced notice (here's x week's pay, you don't have to come in tomorrow)?
Agree, but least when you get cut on a lay-off you get a severance package 📦
I gave just a week.
