Should I join Uber?

I am currently at level 65 in Microsoft in an IC role and have an offer from Uber for Senior Software Engineer level.

Package is being discussed but the level is my concern. I was asking for Senior Software Engineer II but they are not budging.

Is SSE in Uber good enough level for Principal Engineer in Microsoft?

I was a principal engineer at a well known series B travel startup, one of the 3 highest ranked ICs in an org of 600 engineers. 12 yoe & got a senior offer.

Took it and been learning a ton since professionally. Got to 5B in 2 years, my previous experience helped.

With L65, if you have the right architectural experience, you could get a 5B offer. But if you don’t then you won’t. Uber is a really refreshing environment compared to MS (also worked there) and I did not regret it for one bit. YMMV.

Regarding the RSUs: when you join a private company you can’t cash out until it goes public, duh (unless you sell on secondary market). I joined because I think the RSUs / comp valuation are at a ridiculous discount compared to next years planned IPO. If you don’t want that risk or not being able to sell immediately, pre-IPO companies are not for you.

5a here. This would be a small step back in terms of level, but if you are good you should be able to get promo in 12-18 months. In terms of impact you should be able to operate at the next level (pre-requisite for promo) if you can. I would join if you are excited by the area, believe that company will have successful future (I do) and like offered package. Also If we have successful IPO your TC can easily become 500+ or even 700+

      OP
I am waiting for the compensation details, which should take around a week as per the recruiter. Other concerns are if I am not able to cash out RSUs at end of each year as I am able to do with Microsoft’s RSU, it would affect my liquidity.

Congrats on the offer, op. By cashing out I’m assuming you mean vesting the RSUs? RSU at this point are just units without a monetary value, but could be sold on a secondary market. If they could match your TC at MS with salary+bonus, the RSUs should be gravy. Good luck

We should go public in the H2 next year which is also around the time when your first batch of RSUs would vest. So there should be not too big of a difference (include 6 month lockout post IPO) in liquidity if everything goes as planned.

Wrong guess, I told above I’m an Eng. Not all engineers on blind are bitching about their poor life and hate their companies.

    You can’t negotiate your level.

If you got Senior Engineer, it’s because your interview performance was at that level.

65 usually maps to L6. It's not the L7 principal in Amazon.

L6 at Google/FB maps to L5b at Uber

      That explains the 5a offer. I don’t think it’s a down level.

I have seen people with 5 yoe at 5a level and considering it I feel I am being down leveled.

Would it make sense to retry after 6-8 months and try for 5b level?

5b is very hard to get and 5a is a broad band with 5 yoe being an outlier. Most people at 5a tend to be in the 7-12 year range of experience.

Ya. They don’t have title inflation but people get down leveled to senior when they get offers from fb/G

Interview at fb and google and get competing offers. Fight for your 5B—do not count on promo in a year. You will be coming in from a very different environment and will take some time to ramp up.
