Been at Amazon for two years, SDE1. Had a change in manager several months in, new manager doesn't seem to care that much about getting me promoted, and skip level seems to have a cap on the number of engineers he's willing to promote every year. My ultimate goal is to get into Google/FB while having strong competing offers; my current resume didn't get enough bites from top companies. Is taking Microsoft SDE2 going to help with that, or should I stick it out at Amazon and pray for a promotion sometime within the next year? Do people still consider Microsoft a good company for the resume?
I'm not sure L61 maps to SDE2
I went from SDE 1 at Amazon to 61 at Microsoft at the beginning of 2017 and got promoted to 62 this March. The work is a lot easier but there’s a lot more bullshit meetings and bureaucracy. The commute isn’t a great time either.
define work easier. I thought amazon has newer infrastructure and hence development is supposed to be smoother.
Ya I liked the day-to-day experience better at Amazon (besides on-call), but the benefits and work/life balance are better at Microsoft.
Depends on your org. Azure still has a great name brand, but the WLB might not be as advertised on Blind.
On a side note, I've never heard of quota in promotions. And I've been here for 5 years.
My skip level likes having "balanced" teams in terms of the number of SDE1s and 2s. Some other SDE1s under him have gotten their promotions rejected for seemingly no reason, and I suspect that's why.
Ask for 62.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
Yes MS is heavens comparing to AMZN
why?
The work itself and WLB isn't all that important to me right now, I just want to have the best opportunities 2-3 years from now.
