I recently worked on a project outside of work that I want to open source. I’ve already gotten approval for it from Salesforce. And I have the option to open source under my personal Github account or Salesforce’s Github account? I feel like I might get more visibility under Salesforce account, but I’m not sure of other pros/cons. Thoughts?
Personal. If you get suddenly fired you'll lose access to your github account (Something where they send verification email)
I didn't think of this.
I’ll be using my own GitHub account even if the repo is under salesforce. What they could do is make the repo private.
Whatever you do make sure it’s released under a permissive license like Apache. You won’t lose access if it’s licensed under a good OSS license. Make sure IP belongs to you because you did it in your spare time.
If I release under salesforce, it will need a salesforce license 😏
No
Is the project gaining traction? If so, then nake a new website for it and serve ads on so you monetize on it as people come to visit your project to incorporate it into their own work. You will make enough with the ads to have a good 2nd income to retire early. If the project has potential but is dead with no little to no interest, the use Salesforce as your branding platform. Either way, this should go on your LinkedIn profile and write some posts on it so you can capitalize on it.
The project is private right now so no traction. And I’m not expecting it to get much traction after it goes public. My main goal is to use it as experience/advantage for next time I apply for jobs.
