Should I push for more? Google - Uber

Hi Everyone,

I recently received two offers from Google and Uber, and need your opinion for the following:
1) Which one do you recommend?
2) Is there a room of improvement about comp? Should I push for more?
Compensation is Base / Bonus / RSU per year

G: L5 -> 180k / 27k / 160k (TC: 367K)
U: L5 -> 180K / 27k / 160k (TC: 367K)
(well, they basically matched each others offer :) )

As usual, current TC: 300K, YOE: 10 (8 of it is out of country)

That's a solid L5 offer for Google, could be higher but since the competing offer is matched, doubt they will budge.

Also congrats, nice offers from good companies πŸ‘Œ

Thank you very much. I also believe it is a solid offer, and planning to ask some sort of signing bonus then go for it :)

Pre-ipo ppl have a lock in period of 6 months. Don’t join now..

^ jilo18 what do you mean by that

If i join a pre ipo company the first thing i will want to do once the lockout period is over is sell stock asap. Which means many employees will do the same which means at 6 months +1 days post ipo it will gap.

I would recommend Uber. Lots of interesting work, good growth opportunities, fast moving and decent wlb.

Thanks for the input. There are great areas of growth, but the team at google is kind of a better fit for me I believe.

Doubt Google will go above 640K rsu for L5... but Uber will. I saw 720k rsu offer in blind yest..

Just considering TC’s I don’t think 67k is a significant increase to leave your current job at F. You can compare the nature of work, commute and WLB before deciding which company to choose or if you should stay at F. I’m not sure but I think you might be able to push for 10-20k extra if you decide to leave F.

    Good luck and congrats.

The reason I want to leave is not about the compensation. A combination of WLB, vision and short term mindset. 20% increase in TC is a nice bonus for me 😁

Mind sharing how the interviews were for L5? Is it more about coding or system design?

      What about Uber's?

I did better at Uber's interview. Very similar process, but Uber included a boring Behavioral question session with hiring manager.
But the recruitment experience with Uber is way better.

In Google interview, did you manage to solve all coding questions perfectly by identifying all the edge cases etc ? I m seeing people penalized for missing 1-2 edge cases etc

I managed to solve all coding questions but I missed at least 1 steps-edge cases in each one.

  • Congrats! Both nice companies and a good offer! I personally would decide based on team and location. I think Uber will generally be more interesting work, but depending on the team at G you might get lucky there too.
Note the office and perks of U are worse than G, especially the food sucks at U.

      OP
I'd value all the perks of Google over Uber as $10K per year, does that sound right?
Google position is more engineering, Uber position is more product. I guess you are right about the criteria :)
      Jun 17
    • I've actually never worked at G or U myself but have a few friends there and been a few times on the site for lunching (and U lunch was surprisingly shitty lol). I can't put a specific $ value on the perks, but even if it's 10k this small difference wouldn't be a large deciding factor. For me it would be mostly about how interesting the work / team is and the commute πŸ˜‰

I agree with this. Commute will be similar and I need to think about the teams and the work.

Take Google of the offer is about the same.
However you have room on the Uber offer, try to negotiate higher, worst case fallback to Google. If it's successful, then use that to try to increase Google offer

Having worked at both companies, I would say things vary a lot with the team. I don’t suppose you would reveal the teams so go ask your friends at both companies about the matches teams. Of course you can change teams after 6mo to 1 yr but it may not always be easy.

5a or 5b at Uber? You should be able to get more RSUs for 5b. I’d take Google L5 over Uber 5a.

Uber apparently is laying off engineering staff now, so I say Google sounds safer.

Offer seems solid. I got an offer of $303k for L5 since I didn't have a competing offer, which is ridiculous. Later I got a competing offer but they didn't find any teams so I went elsewhere. I'm surprised signing bonus was so low though. I recently got offers elsewhere for $100k or $160k, spread out over 2 years.
