My current situation is I live in North Carolina with a TC of 160k and yoe of 5. I work as a consultant doing development on the Salesforce platform. The offer is to be a contractor for 4 months at Salesforce in San Francisco and at $85 an hour. So it’s a little more TC but it’s only a 4 month contract and I’d have to rent in SF while still paying a mortgage in NC so I would be losing money overall. Should I take it in hopes of getting a full time position at Salesforce after the contract?
As a general rule how many of those contractors down there in RTP actually make it to the big show? Your chances are probably the same.
At Salesforce quite often. It’s the internship for adults
You need 250 here to be remotely competitive with current comp. Why on earth would you take this gig?
No no no no NO. Unless you can negotiate way more TC
160k in NC affords you a comfortable life. Ditching that to come over to SF for a contracting gig is totally not worth it.
# of work hours in a year is 2080 and they are paying you $85/hour. So if you annualize that, your annual salary will be $176,800. That number isn't too far from what you currently make and you will be on a hook to pay higher rent in SF. It's no brainer. You know what to do.
If you think this could land you a full time gig at Salesforce and you can afford to take this risk, and if this is what you want, certainly go for it. I have taken such risks in my life disregarding TC and it paid off well.
Cost of living in CA is insane.
Alright thanks for the advice everyone and that’s kind of what I was thinking. Second question though: I haven’t had the interview yet and it’s scheduled for next week as a google hangout with 3 people from Salesforce. Should I tell the agency recruiter to cancel it because I’m not interested or should I do the interview anyway? Which route is less likely to burn the bridge? Cancelling interview or rejecting an offer? Idk id either will burn since it’s only a contract offer through an agency so yeah. Any thoughts?
Tell them the comp is not sufficient for you to make the move. Ask for whatever comp would be sufficient (for a contractor that's probably closer to $125). Otherwise it's a waste of time for both
If I had an offer for $160k in NC I would go there and leave Cupertino and the Bay Area without a 2nd thought.
How much are you making in Cupertino?
Base $200k, bonus $40k, RSU $220k. 7 years in the same team, 3 years at another tech company before that.
No, stay in NC. Please don't come here, already too crowded. Doesn't even make financial sense. 😂
