Should you ever leave a FTE job for a contractor job to switch job functions? Contractor job would pay more...but I have pride and don’t know if I can stand the chance of being perceived as a second class citizen :( I know it can be a foot in the door, but I went to a prestigious college and don’t know how I can face other classmates who are actually an FTE when I’ll be a TVC at the same company. Call it narrow-minded but I can’t help but worry about that. Should I just decline the contractor job and keep applying?
Don’t compare yourself to others and think you are better because you went to a “prestigious college”.
Find your identity in something other than the opinions of other people and life will go much better. Not just trying to be a jerk. This is true. When your self worth doesn't come from what others think you will have a lot more joy in life.
I know many full timers who have no clue what they are doing but feel they are superior smh. My prev manager is a contractor and he single handedly turned the project around from some sloppy full timer managers.
I’m going to make an educated guess that you are Indian. keywords: “pride”, “prestige”, “classmates”
He's an Affirmative Action Indian. 😏
Do it bro, live a little
First off, there are plenty of people that didn’t even go to college that are smarter than you. Get your head out of your ass. You simply overpaid for college - boom. Now that that’s out of the way, yeah - if you can get a TVC job at a better company (I would pick TVC at google over FTE at Oracle, every single fucking time.) then it doesn’t matter - your resume is about your experience. Employers don’t give a shit if you were contract or FTE. There’s also chance to be FTE and go through an internal interview process rather than the external one. I know many who did successfully. And they were never treated as second class...maybe at the distinction legally for employment reasons, but not on a day to day basis. Once again, get your head out of your ass. You care too much about what others think of you. Are they paying your bills?
+1 Though I am willing to bet $1000 that OP is Indian and his main motivation is driven by cultural expectations. I’ve been noticing this the more I work with my vendor team. There seems to be an almost unhealthy fixation on each other’s background (schooling or hometown), signals of wealth (driving a brand new BMW or Mercedes Benz), and credentials.
It’s ridiculous.
@neopets good one 👌
Only if you have a specialized skill that companies don't want to develop. Like makefile/cmake, kernel, etc expert
