I know few guys do negotiate at verbal offer stages. But I have observed that strategy will not work at times. I personally had that experience with a company. I have read couple of websites that said you should first get an offer letter so that you have a firm footing to negotiate either with the same employer or with other employers. Do you guys feel that you should wait for official offer in the email and then negotiate for what you want ? Will they change the offer letter once you finish negotiations?
Mostly at the verbal stage... make the recruiters job easy not harder. Most companies wouldn’t give out offer letter till you verbally accept. If u verbally accepted and then say u want more you better have a good reason.
Agree with above.. I had one time where we didn't agree but recruiter rolled out offer letter and I didn't sign and let it expire and continue to push and they came back with second one within expectations.. So depends.. If you verbally agree, don't push after..
Are you guys saying if I just got an verbal offer and then they followed up with an offer letter and if I say that I need time to think about it and counter the offer. What do I do ?
Well if you didn't accept verbally, and if it is not what you want, then do negotiate.. I meant don't go back if you accepted verbally and they offered..
Always be negotiating :)
What are your thoughts on phone or email negotiations?
Curious about this as well. I assume most prefer a phone call
I can understand why many people who write articles about negotiations say phone. They are worried that people might not convey the exact meaning in a email and that people might screw up a little in the process. But I feel same can happen to a phone conversation too. I am really confused !
Primarily before but can also after.
