Signon bonus payback clause

Hi, received an offer from MSFT that I'm currently reviewing. The signon bonus is split into 2 installments - 1st half at the start of joining contingent on the successful completion of 12 months from start date, 2nd half at the beginning of 2nd year contingent on the successful completion of 24 months from start date. Failure to stay at the company during these periods will require me to return the signon bonus accordingly. Is MSFT's full signon bonus contingent on a 24 months stay period typically, or is it 12 months to receive the full amount? Want to make sure I can get the best out of them. Thanks!

Ask msft to pay back the previous company's sign on in addition to their own sign on

You can also negotiate to have entire sign on paid in 1st year just fyi

The payout is split between beginning and end of first year. It's the payback clause that concerns me - 12 months stay for 1st installment and 24 months stay for 2nd installments. If I don't stay stay long, my bonus would be ineligible and I would have to return it.

The split sign on bonus over 2 years is not uncommon in the industry, especially if it is a large amount, but like all things is open to negotiation.

It's actually over a year, start and end of first year. But the payback clause applies over 24 months for the 2nd installment and 12 for the first.

End of the 1st year vs start of the second year for the second payment is pretty much the same thing, but sure. I'd ask if they'd be willing to put it all on a 1 year payback if you're even a little bit concerned about staying for 2 years.
