Just got an offer in Singapore as Senior Backend Engineer. 8k SGD monthly + 25k SGD shares. It seems like for an expat (let's say European) that's a not-so-good package as rent there starts from 3k+ SGD if you don't live in a government house. I talked to other people living there and and none of them goes below 10K+ per month. I'm currently working remotely, have a nice lifestyle in another country in South East Asia and get to save, but the startup I'm working for might fail fast. As a remote worker there's not much team management so the growth is merely technical and the feeling is that I'm not expert in any tech as much as I would like. I feel like I'm an excellent and passionate employee, but seems like without previous corporate experience getting a high salary is impossible. Recurring and annoying questions are: - how many people did you manage - tell me about one time you had to fix a problem with a teammate you argued with (never happened, I have to make up episodes) Does anyone have insights or similar packages there? Is it worth moving with this much or I will spend my time counting the cent?
If you doubt it from the beginning, don’t do it. Once you start low you will stay low
He can change a job after a year to get a salary bump. This is what most of singaporeans do.
I usually agree with this kind of analysis, but I wonder if it might be worth investing career wise, struggle a little and get a much better job within 1 year. The problem is that I'm not sure there's a much more paid job in that area.
You can consider coming here on this job and interviewing again. Most financial institutions (banks / insurance companies etc.) are very comfortable paying S$ 150 - 200k for engineering talent if you are perceived as relatively senior. If you are aggressive, specialise in a hot area, have a few name brand cos on your resume and have a healthy dose of luck, you can land roles in the S$ 300-400k region. 8k will afford you a relatively comfortable lifestyle: comfortable condos with 2-3 beds go for 2.5-3k in rent, gym membership cost about 100-500$ a month, and food can cost between 500 - 2000 $ a month, depending on how much you eat out. You likely won’t be able to afford a car or rent an actual house with a yard and garden, though.

Are you single? How many yoe?
Not single, not married, no kids, but that's the plan. 8 YOE with multiple tech stack. I might have my partner moving with me with a single salary until she finds a job as well.
Oh then I agree the salary is low for 8yoe. However, 8k is enough to live comfortably in Singapore. You should find an 1-bedroom apartment for about 2.5k. Transport and food are relatively cheap.
