Sleep... howto?

I can't fall asleep easily and can't wake up easily. I never feel sleepy unless I'm +3h the last time I fell asleep. It's like my internal day is longer than it should be. I'm dragging this problem since VERY early in my life. No one really ever takes me serious about this. All I get is "go early to sleep".

Now that work life has started I'm searching professional help, but so far the first doc I saw told me to go early to sleep (what a joke...) and told me to use benadryl when struggling. Benadryl does work and is awesome... for that occasional use. It doesn't fix anything though.

Deep breathing, light bulbs that turn on in the morning, making room super dark, listening to boring stuff on YouTube, being strict with myself, going super early to bed, getting out of bed if not asleep in 20min. Tried it all: nothing works in the long run.

Anyone got something else / been in a similar situation for +5 years?

    Exercise in the evening... and exercise to the point that you drop dead tired. Your body will automatically pass out.

      Hmm... Gonna try that. I did it throughout the day. Tried 2 hours cardio and was even more awake in the evening. I think I do feel a bit more tired in the period close to after doing it... ?

      You'll feel awake in the evening but at night you'll sleep like a baby

      When you exercise your body releases endorphins, it triggers more energy and keeps you hyper and active after. So don’t exercise in the evening, instead do it in the mornings. I bet you’ll be tired as heck by bedtime.

    I had sleeping issues for ~20 years, I went a year ago to a sleep consultant that suggested:
    * Staying away from screens 1 hour before sleeping
    * Writing a journal about trobuling thoughts
    * Avoid drinking coffee/tea/cola
    * Avoid having busy days (back2back meetings)
    * Try mindfulness app

    I still cant believe it, but - only the mindfulness app worked. 10-15 minutes before sleeping.
    I started falling asleep immidiately, remembering dreams again and wakimg up fresh.
    Bare in mind - I was super anti mindfulness /mediations things, but if it works it works.

      Gonna look into journal and mindfulness. App for later installed now. Thanks! The other points in itself haven't done much in the past, but will try out in combination with this.

    What NFS said above. Also, it's possible to try going to bed later / getting up later. It's possible that you're just a night owl.

      That would be great... if I didn't feel like everyone will judge me at work.

      Why would they judge you? Are you in one of the sadistic teams that schedules meetings before 11 AM? Otherwise, they should mind their own business. Everyone peaks at different times of the day, and if your peak is in the evening, going to work early is a waste

    Sex/jerking off works everytime. Exercising in the evening is the most bs advice. It makes you more alert rather.q

    Have same problem for four years. And I found every time it happens when Im under pressure. And I could easily get asleep if my mom is around. Try find a people who makes you at ease and comfortable. I tried many brands melatonin. Only the one from wholefoods, the calm chocolate works for me. But don’t get relied on it. Someone mentioned sex helps. While I literally have my sex drive reduced after having melatonin 😥

      Ah yeah... Melatonin. How stupid I was when I thought 10mg is nice. Woke up with a headache that was not from this world. 5 seconds of that hell and it was suddenly gone. Me, being a man of science, did it another time to confirm. ^^

      But yeah, low dose helps me too. But might as well combine it with benadryl since its also just for occasional use.

    Cover your eyes with a sleep mask. You don't have to worry about minor lights in the room.. or from outside. Your body starts producing melatonin automatically and you go to sleep. Ensure room temperature is at a level that is comfortable for you. You can use any cloth versus a sleep mask. Just for kicks check the reviews that the masks have on Amazon

    Exercise regularly, take note of everything you put into your body. A dna test was helpful for me to determine potential experiments with supplements. Stay away from all medication. Read: Why We Sleep.
