I’m new to snowboarding. I took one class that was pretty much useless and went another time on my own. I keep falling a lot. A lot. Do you suggest I pay for a private class? I’m not so sure since the trainers don’t seem good at teaching. I’ve been watching videos and making notes of what to try in my own next time I go. Any ideas on how to improve a little bit faster? And also, best place for beginners to practice?
I took group lessons at Snoqualmie and Stevens then practiced after class. Total of six classes? Then got a seasons pass. It takes continuous practice to get the hang of it. Butt pad, knee pads and wrist guards are good investments.
Will do the group lessons instead of the private ones. Thx
If you find an amazing instructor then private might be worth it. You will learn how to stop and maybe falling leaf the first lesson. Then “J” turns on the heel then toe side, then linking your turns. Once you can link turns you are golden.
I bike. Swim. Run. What other exercises do you suggest I do to strengthen the right muscles?
Squats
Balancing exercises and twitch muscles probably
I found moving from skiing to snowboarding to be pretty easy. I started by just going horizontal all the way down the hill. Slowly I’d start going more vertical but correct after gathering some speed. Figuring out you balance is key. Don’t attempt toe turning until you’re quite comfortable with your balance.
Sound advice! Thanks.
Try skateboarding daily when you aren't at the mountain to improve your balance.
Don’t do it. You will embarrass yourself. Just play cricket.
You need to go 3 days in a row. The first day will suck but you'll start to get it near the end. The second day will be better and by the third, you'll have a little muscle memory and will actually enjoy yourself. Get a pair of wrist protectors to wear under your gloves. That being said conditions kinda suck right now.
Take at least 1 day of lessons. 10000%.
I found youtube videos are way more helpful than the instructors in beginner classes. buy a rocker board which should be easier for turning. Keep in mind which edge you are on, toe vs heel, so that you don’t catch an edge and eat snow. If you find it hard to turn, try putting more weight on the front foot. You can imagine grabbing head of the board with your arm. If you find it hard to make a toe turn, try looking up hill. Many beginners look down hill all the time causing poor body alignment. It’s actually not hard. Where you look is where you going. Lift your toes facing down hills. Lift your heels like kneeling down when facing up hill. Be safe and have fun.
Thanks! Will try this.

Northstar should be a good place for beginner.
Have you been there?
Northstar and Heavenly are best for beginners. Also have the best villages.
