So happy and thankful to be at Google

I've been at Google as a SWE for 2 years, and I'm still so happy and thankful to be at Google because it has always been my dream company. Idk how I even got in. I always feel like the dumbest guy in the room at Google. I recently got promoted to L4 but am completely happy, thankful, and satisified and feel like I've reached my life goal.

Anybody feel the same? I feel like most people I see on blind are full of ambition and never satisified; constantly looking to get higher TC. I don't mind not getting promoted and would be completely happy even if I never got promoted again. But I will still work hard regardless and go for promo again if it makes sense.

Maybe getting abused at my previous company makes me appreciate Google even more.

TC: 270k

@Google probably. It is a big lifestyle change going from 500k to $5million in terms of money. The most important is probably the self satisfaction and mindset change.

Awesome to read. Sock away as much cash as you can so you'll have options lateral in life. Aging out is a real thing, in the event that you get tired of Google and want to go elsewhere when you're much older. Or just want to get it off tech all together.

Aside from money and perks, do you like the work at Google? I think I'd rather go to a smaller company with less boring work at some point (although I've actually had a great experience at Amazon; people here are actually supportive, although the bar feels low, and I sometimes feel like a dick calling people out for repeatedly making the same mistakes). I'd expect the work at Google and Amazon are mostly the same slow/boring things.

I think it's kinda sad that something like Google is your "dream company," honestly. We all have to have goals, I guess. Like, your life goal is to work for some specific company? That's it???

OP didn’t say it was their dream, just their dream company. I have a dream car, but it isn’t my whole life and it doesn’t make me a lesser person for wanting it.

Google's perks, and I've heard the WLB are nice - and 270k is nothing to sneeze at!

It's nice to see someone happy on Blind instead of complaining that they only make 400k instead of 500k.

      Nov 17
    • Amazon MsSanchez
Google is literally JUST data collection and ads. YouTube collects data on you to show you ads. Gmail scans your mail to show you ads. What does Google do that is NOT data collection and ads?

OTOH Amazon retail... you are there to shop, and based on what you search for we show you things to buy. Amazon AWS we give tools to devs to build anything. Amazon is so much more than ads. Amazon is customer focused.

      Nov 18
    • Amazon AIV
Depends on the team. TAM in AIV used to be a biz dev position with like the smallest hint of vendor support (they’ve mostly done away with the role and replaced with PMs from a pay band perspective. I think they brought back catalog specialists too in the L3 role). But I know in like AWS it’s essentially an entry level CSA.

The bar in AIV for a TAM was really high though. They had some very high caliber employees at pretty low levels for years because the promo panels were all run by SDMs who expected system design skills from L5 TAMs.

That sounds like a skills mismatch in terms of promo panels, not so much a bar being high, TAMs are not supposed to have system design skills, because, again, they’re just f**** support, that’s not their job. They’re basically the next role after CSA, they’re usually admin guys with decent infrastructure knowledge and basic troubleshooting skills...
