TC: 250k YOE: 14 Currently SDE II (L5) at Amazon and Q3 Promo process in progress and is on schedule. Most likely, I would be SDE III (L6) from October 1st. My current manager and skip level are aware of my interest in transitioning to management role and hence, for past few months, I have been given larger role of managing(projects, schedules, priorities) my current team (I guess it also helps my manager as he just joined a month ago). It seems that getting promotion or transitioning to management after it, isn't going to bump up TC meaningfully. I am targeting TC in the range of 400k. So. I am starting to look elsewhere now for SDM roles. I am looking for any pointers on interview process for SDMs at FAMG. - Is there coding round? - Do SDMs code? What %? - What are interviewers looking for in SDM roles? - Any resources to prepare for interviews?
If you don't have direct reports, or haven't had them very long, it will be tough getting SDM role elsewhere. Yes, there will be a coding round, but they'll also ask for various management experiences (have you had to manage a low performer, etc) that might be difficult for you to answer.
Haven't been a official manager. But was practically managing a team of 8 devs for 2 years including writing annual performance reviews for them in my previous job. Though didn't have opportunity to manage their compensation or directly interact with HR.
Heck I’m a manager and I don’t even know how to properly answer those questions either. I just try to be honest but no idea what they actually want to hear or if there’s a “correct” answer. Any good management question prep resources?
In your current state you probably won't even get a recruiter to reply. We don't hire external M0s.
Do M0s code at FB? What %? How is the interview process? I am in touch with one FB recruiter and it seems, I might be able to secure at least an interview
I'm in the middle of the process at FB, Google, and Microsoft. FB to manage a single team, Google to manage both managers and ICs, and Microsoft to manage a ~50 person org. FB and Google have told me to expect a coding round and that any coding down on the job would be optional. Edit, forgot most important detail: YOE 20, 10 as hands-on manager, 4+ as manager of managers.
Hi @ Wayfair : I recently became a manager . Any suggestions/ tips to excel at my job ? I want to be a good manager to my team
How long did it take for you to be considered for L6 promo at amazon ? What ended up happening with you ?
LPs. Coding depends upon each company
