Are there teams in tech companies or certain tech companies where one can be a software engineer and can still have the opportunity to travel for work at times? I am not looking for a consulting company like Deloitte. Any advice is appreciated. Edit: thanks everyone for their replies. Helped a lot. :)
Tech evangelism
Some tech companies have in-house consulting-style departments, though that might not be too different from Deloitte, depending on what part of that doesn't appeal to you. Also, a while back I was working at a startup that did low-level bundled software for mobile phones. Anything that involves making sure something works on unreleased hardware is likely to come with opportunities for engineers to travel. I spent a lot of time in Korea for that. Ex: maybe Netflix has department that works with TV manufacturers get their Smart TV apps working smoothly. And come to think of it if, recruiters might be eager to work with you to find a fit. Don't be afraid to directly tell them you're interested in something specific!
Plenty of onboard/shipboard engineering opportunities at cruise lines, not a tech company though
Solutions Architects / Sales Engineers / Customer Engineers do exactly the kind of work you are looking for
Thoughworks, for one. I guess this is the exact type you are looking for. Mainly coding work but you would be camping at the client’s office.
