Not sure if this is relevant for this platform. Just would like to get better idea as we moved very recently. For my elementary kid, the teacher suggest for SPED i.e special education support at school, as she is lagging behind in reading and inference. The school suggests this option, however we are worried when we read the details about this method. She is a kid who is very creative. We dont think she is that far behind to catch up. If we choose this option, and if this is going to be added in her records, will it affect her future. There are lot of cons when we googled about this. Any direction would be highly appreciated.
I highly doubt Harvard will read into if your child was in SPED during their elementary years. I’m no parent but knowing family members who’s children went into SPED, there was no huge change in their personality as long as they were not kept in it. The child of a family member was kept in SPED like programming through middle school and I feel the kids who were in the program hindered him from growing to his full potential. At the end of the day it’s important to keep in mind there is no perfect answer, the fact you’re thinking over this so carefully shows how much you love your kid. Regardless of the decision you make I’m sure she’ll turn out great, you sound like amazing parents which is what matters the most for a kids development.
Thank you.
If you dont want SPED have you considered tutoring or book clubs? As a kid there used to be a video game called Reading Blaster and Math Blaster, both were fun and adventurous while also being educational. Is there a way to integrate reading into her current hobbies? Maybe books about her favorite cartoons and shows. Just tossing the ball against the wall here to help you brainstorm.
Thanks for your suggestion. I will definitely explore more on this.
Check visual processing as well, a lot of times kids are slow on these things because they have specific visual problems that can be addressed. (Kageyamavision.com if you're in the bay area)
What is your plan to have her catch up without special school support? Also, what are the cons you found?
As a parent we are planning to spend more time with her especially with reading. We did enroll externally for reading and math classes. The cons are like the kid losing confidence and would make them difficult to work independently. Socially also they will struggle to mingle in groups.
