Spotify Compensation

Can anyone here speak to the compensation at Spotify? Are they good with matching competing offers? And looking down the road, how are they with raises? I am currently ~2 years out of school and going through the interview process.

The work there looks very interesting and I know the culture is a blast. I would absolutely love to work at Spotify, but would hate to take a paycut.

Compensation is below market. No raises or bonuses in general unless your manager really pushes for you. The average target "raise" is 3%.

Spotify definitely lowballs, but if you negotiate, they're surprisingly responsive. My comp is $200k+ but would have been a lot lower if I hadn't played hard to get or leveraged other employers' interest in me.

I think I lot of young new grads just can't believe they have the opportunity to work for a "cool" company and will take whatever offer they're given without question.

Thanks for the response, that's awesome! How many years of experience do you have? My current salary is $155k, do you think they would be able to match that?

Yeah definitely. They're not strapped for cash, they just realize they are an enviable company to work for and take advantage of it.

Spotify’s official policy is 75th percentile of market with 3% department average annual raise. No bonuses. Don’t work at Spotify if you want to be paid well.

The big problem is TC. Just the salary number is sometimes not bad, especially for incoming hires, if you negotiate well. But TC is way lower than at other tech companies of similar size/status because the stock package sucks and will probably continue to.

No RSUs, just options, so you have to sink own cost in first. And strike price is really high if you joined recently, with stock performance not being as sure of a thing as with google, FB, etc.

I can see it being possible at a senior level, depending on how you factor in the options package in your TC. Spotify doesn't guarantee yearly options/bonus, but if you're a high performer you should be able to regularly get that (probably worth another 20k to your TC, maybe more depending on impact?)

I have seen high performest that didn’t get shit. So no, its not about being high performer

I guess it means three things: solid performer, appreciation by your manager and in being in an org that distinguishes raises based on performance.

Two out of three doesn't cut it and maybe you should find out which was true in those situations?

You can negotiate a good initial salary, but raises are bad. So don't count on any significative change afterwards. Old timers who carry the company on their backs suffer from that and leave.

My salary comp is north of 170k with a 400k cost basis for options. I'm a 2.5 but negotiated/played hard to get with my TA. My raise this year was only 3%, sadly.

I joined a year ago, too, if that helps.

How did you negotiated when they say it is the final offer? You joined a year, option must worth a lot, but now, option does not work much. So wanted to negotiate for more base.

They’ll often give you the options number of the level above you when you negotiate, which turns out to be very lucrative.
