What is the typical equity refresh for a SWE at Square? Is it roughly 1/4 of the new hire grant per year, like other companies? I'm trying to evaluate offers in terms of comp over 4 years, and my other offers have clear guidelines/expectations for equity refreshes. So what should I use to approximate Square's equity refresh value (at L5)?

Refreshers are laughable compared to other companies. L5 and got ~70K last cycle.
Are you a top performer? How's that amount laughable? Google, Uber and airbnb, for instance, target no more than 100k for that level. Not sure about uber now though.
Uber 5a is somewhere around 150k plus a target bonus cash. Not to mention 70k x 4 is actually less than our starting offers for L5
Refreshers are very team and individual performance driven - an example my first refresher as an ok performer was $105k at L5 - if you’re working well you’ll be compensated around 1/4 of the new hire grant on average in my opinion. Top performers significantly more.
Annual refreshers are common. Both meets and exceeds would usually get them, though we have no concept of either. We don’t have a formal ratings system.

No, your manager is 💯 responsible for allocation. Each team and org get their own budget.
