Considering joining Square as software engineer L5. How long before I can typically transition to Eng management ? Is it possible to make the transition at L5 or do I need to get promoted to L6? Current TC -265k
Question about square levels. Is L6 at square does really map to google’s T5? The recruiter made a big deal of square’s 6 level
Somewhat. https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Square,Google&track=Software%20Engineer
From what i could tell it means t5 at google is l6/l7 at square. I keep not understanding the big deal about l6 at square.
I had 10 people in my SWE loop at Square. Most everyone was under 30. Yet nearly everyone introduced him/herself as an eng mgr. Does anyone actually code there? What a joke, a flood of overconfident millennials who code for a year and then transition to management. Get me away from these companies.
That's actually L4 at FANG.
The L5’s that I’ve seen transition into management had either done management at a previous company, or have been an L5 for a couple of years and are at the senior end of the level. You definitely don’t want to transition into management if you are not technically ready for the role. Why the rush to go into management anyway?
No rush. Can do after 1-2 years. Just wanted to know if it’s possible at L5
Yes, it’s definitely possible. One thing to note is that you may be qualified for a management role but a management role needs to open up on your team, which doesn’t always happen. If you communicate your ambitions to your recruiter then he/she can try to match you with a team that has potential management opportunities.
Can someone please comment on the EM hiring process at Square ? Typical phone/onsite rounds ?
Prepare for pair programming, architecture and leadership interviews. You basically have to prepare for a software engineering interview with additional leadership interviews.
Thanks, is the majority Leadership based ? And one coding/design each ? Or Are coding and design multiple rounds ?
You are eligible to switch 9 months after you join.
Thank you for clarifying !
