Square Merchant’s Aggressive Self-Tipping

The one thing that really annoys me about square is how aggressive merchants end up using it for tipping. If they turn around the machine for me to sign and they already selected 20% or higher as the tip then it puts me in an incredibly awkward position if I want to lower it with them basically hawkishly peeking over my shoulder. It’s like if I paid someone with a $20 bill and they hand me back $6 as change and assume a 20% tip for themselves — if I want to tip lower than 20% then I have to go back and take the bills out of their hands. That might be an exaggeration, but it’s kinda representative of that feeling. Of course you can just lower it and “take back your money”, but I digress... I have literally had fast food-esque places put 20% tips when there’s no service provided whatsoever. Sure if they do a great job then I’ll tip them 20%, that’s not an issue, it’s just that awkward “forced” tipping feeling... am I just being crazy or does anyone else feel this way?

Halal Gyro Express guy in San Jose always selects the "no tip" option before turning the screen to me. Really appreciate this.

I like when they do this as well, but it's odd because it is possible to just disable tipping from the merchant end.

Maybe he doesn't know how

When I see options starting at 20% I press the no tip button

I agree 1000%. This shit gets old. There’s a bar in the Mission SF that will include a 20% tip in the total and then give you the thing to sign with ANOTHER 20% as is usually suggested (+20% suggestion is in addition to the total+included tip, and that total is only in tiny letters at the top of the screen). I’m sure most people just add the 20% and sign and the bar keeps like $3 for each $16 cocktail. It’s called the Beehive and it’s not worth it by the way.

It's pretty unfortunate merchants take advantage of their own customers. Definitely use that as a way to put it as no tip and if they give you a look, let them know why. Or a manager.

I’ve always wondered, do the Square sales people use this tipping strategy as a selling point to merchants?

I don't know for certain, but I would hope not

This is nuts. Too many people caring about virtue signaling than standing up for themselves. It’s your money, you decide the tip. Simple.

Clicking the tip button for me => no tip, and no more of my business.

Square just rejected me after a huge investment of time. The hiring manager wanted me but at least someone in the loops advised against me. I’ll now be sure to only use cash where I see Square is accepted. Though I already do — for the reason mentioned in this post. I don’t like the tip thuggery either. Especially in a city where everyone gets at least $15 an hour.

This wouldn't happen for just one round unless you were not professional to an interviewer during the interview process. You either were a jerk or you did bad in two rounds You can definitely use cash where Square is accepted, but that seems pretty spiteful for just a simple rejection. Going to stop using a Mac/iPhone if apple rejects you? Windows if Microsoft? Android if google? Big lul about $15/hr. Could you survive on $15/hr? No you could not.

I use cash to avoid bank fees. And I’m not a jerk.
