Staff software eng in LinkedIn

I’m e6 in Fb(was promoted in the last psc). I got an invite for an interview with LinkedIn for staff eng(which is e5 compared to Fb - levels.fyi). I asked them if they have positions for senior staff, which seems to be e6 equivalent, but they told me they cannot do that because of my EOY. Is it just recruiter bullshit or is it a real thing in LinkedIn?

tc:420, yoe:10

if there are senior LinkedIn eng willing to chat in private on Blind - I’d really appreciate it

E6 is not comparable to Sr Staff in LinkedIn. Sr Staff is extremely hard to achieve in LI and rarely recruit from outside. You need to have some serious great successful record, or being the lead in certain domain in order to be hired as Sr Staff.

You can negotiate to close 500k TC for Staff offer. But it is very unlikely to start Sr Staff process with you.

Used to work in LinkedIn. Had a terrible time. In my org there, everyone disliked the senior staffs. They seemed like mostly overhead, doing TPM work. How can you TL 60 people? Doesn't make sense.

A few of them had clear TL mandates for a 10 person team. Not unlike e6 at FB, but without any coding and with much less accountability. E6 you perform or you are fired. Senior staff can just hang out

Well, from the last 2 comments it seems like SrStaff can’t just code, so all their impact comes from eng they manage and looks like it’s more political thing... Sad

Yeah I didn't think they even added much value in terms of technical direction. Just doing organizational tasks that slowed everyone else down.

There are few Sr. Staff+ ICs who are famous for coding, and most Sr Staffs rarely coding.

I will say they were all very strong and respected engineers. But it is a weird role unless you have clear project scope rather than TL of a whole org.

Let me elaborate. My TC is on upper edge of what decent e5 package is. I need money run, as looks like Fb doesn’t respect internal promos

You have E6 at FB, clearly based on merit since you were promoted, and LinkedIn is trying to down-level you purely based on YOE? That's insane and should make you question your decision to consider LinkedIn in the first place.

I moved from LinkedIn staff to e6. There is a huge gap in expectations. It's a big downgrade if you make that move.

This is juve, having fun on blind and changing names. Yeah I don't think you will get paid more as a staff at LinkedIn.

Also a lot of promos come with DE in January cycle. Maybe ask your manager about that.

On the other hand e6 sucks and can be too stressful. LinkedIn will pay you very well and will take less out of you...

Good point, not sure if you can ask for AE/DE or at least will make any significant difference for your chance of getting one.... will try to negotiate for Sr staff, will see how it goes...

Btw, since you’ve been here and might now: what’s the starting salaries for managers there? Are they equal to staff eng as in Fb?

It's considered a lateral move, no raise unfortunately.

      Good luck with the negotiation!

Same thing, different names. Just a random amount of stocks given by your director for unknown reason, but usually really big improvement of something or significant impact

Hold your ground. If they want you, they have to meet your requirements. You have a good thing going. They need to account for that.

I'm assuming you like working at FB. If you're trying desperately to get out, that complicates things.

And remember: NEVER, EVER DISCLOSE YOUR TC.

    LinkedIn Staff > FB E5.

Compensation will be same as Google L6, both of which are around 10% lower than FB.

Their best engineers are in Systems and Infra. You can find good roles there.

Scope and Comp of Staff > 5s.

E5 and L5 don’t make $500k+ salaries. E5 and L5 don’t lead products. Half the staffs at LinkedIn have that scope and they earn 500+ TC (without stock appreciation). Maximum I have seen at Google for L5 is around 400k TC.

The issue is that the starting band of Staff is sooner/lower at LinkedIn than FB/Goog. They should have kept that part with Sr SWE or split things into 5a and 5b- the way Uber did.

According to Paysa, even directors make around 450k at Linkedin. How much would a senior staff or director actually make on average?
