Start at Microsoft in 2 weeks and still don't have a team. Is it a bad idea to reach out to teams I'm interested in?

I contacted HR 3 weeks ago asking about which team I'm on and said she doesn't know but said a manager should get in contact with me once I'm paired. I don't mind waiting, but I was interested in maybe working on the Edge team/Power BI would it hurt to reach out on LinkedIn? If so what should I say? I'm pretty sure this is a result of the WDG org.

“Hey, can I join your team?” “Who are you? Who let you in here?! SECURITY!!”

It's not a bad idea. Many of those teams might not have a headcount, but it shows initiative. Why don't you ask your recruiter if it's kosher?

I’m pretty sure your offer letter mentions which org you would be joining. Also, no teams have been dissolved as a part of wdg re org. I’m joining in a couple of weeks too. Don’t message other teams. It’s a stupid idea.

I checked and at the bottom it names the director so I think I have an idea now.

You'll be put on a team under that org. Who ever has open headcount and likes your resume.

Not a bad idea at all, shows initiative

See that's what I was kind of thinking but I don't want to just walk up to them and be like "hey can I be on your team?"

Do what Costanza did - don’t ask. Just show up to the team and assume you’re already on it.

It’s very bad sign that you don’t know the team where you are joining .... this means that you have been assigned a team and they don’t care about you and so have chosen not to reach out to you. Remember that people don’t join. Or leave companies they join and leave the manager and team. Thus it’s very important that you know what you are walking into

Is there a shortlist of teams you can choose from? If so, it should be ok for you to indicate interest, but that is also risky because it might end up with disappointment. Microsoft is a completely top-down company and engineers don’t usually get to make decisions like these.

If you’re a college hire this is normal

They would have hired for a bigger team which has many openings. Sometimes, they will be forming a new team, in that case the whole team would be new and the new manager might not have joined the team yet! Contact HR, asking if you have been assigned a team, if not, do you have an option to choose.
