Have a web presence (blog, open source, articles) plus provide some meaningful tool for free that solves a common industry problem. Long way of saying provide internet trust.

Biggest thing is customer acquisition—there’s plenty of consultancies out there that are bigger/more experienced than you, how are you going to get the attention of customers, and once you do how are you going to convince them that you’re worth working with. Second biggest is successful execution on the projects you do get (which leads to customer retention and positive word of mouth, helping with #1). If you’re from the SWE side, I’d recommend taking a quick read through the book, The Personal MBA. A lot of it is common sense, but it’ll be helpful for you to fully understand the different elements of a business. PM me if you have more questions, I ran a consulting team of ~10+ people at my previous startup.
