I am starting a new job in a month at Google. But suddenly with every passing day, I have started getting a feeling that I am going to fail and I will not be able to survive. I have been in my current job for 7 years, so have never been out of my comfort zone. The job description of new position mentions a few things which I have never done and I am aware of those things only theoretically. The language I will be coding is also new and I will have to work on completely new things. Yes I was aware of all these things before applying and I was ready for the challenge. But somehow these days every night I am up late in the night thinking I am going to fail and will be fired. I have a huge home loan and if I am fired, I will be screwed. Has anyone felt such anxiety. How did you guys overcome this. tc ~300k, yoe ~7
It happens, don't work it'll be totally fine. Googlers are a friendly and chill bunch. You'll pick up the new skills and wonder that you were even worried about it. Just stay busy and enjoy your time before the new role - it'll be great! Welcome to the team!
Thanks. That helps !!
Welcome! and at Google there’s a handful of internal systems that will help you get the info you need. there are people you can easily reach out to. there’s also internal classes you can take if you need a certain skill and they will reimburse part of any external educational expenses too.
Like Richard Branson said if you get a good opportunity but dont know how to do it, take it and figure out how to accomplish it later. This has helped me multiple times in the past, and I always surprise myself.
That Branson quote has helped me quite a lot, too. Following that advice has helped me reach a place in my career I never thought I’d attain.
Coz u are thinking u are going to work in a company which you don’t deserve or u got something beyond ur imagination which is a wrong feeling. Just chill and enjoy your time.
If you have time to spare in the coming weeks, ask your new manager for a recommendation on tutorial and get your feet wet in the new language and maybe start playing with concepts of the new problem space. I'm sure they know both are new to you and will plan ramp up accordingly, but it might appease your imposter syndrome to do what prep you can to hit the ground running.
It’s a nice idea but manager would probably reply saying to enjoy your time before you start. Noogler phase is all about learning! Most people go through some feelings like OP and Google does a good job of making you understand it’s okay to be slow at first while ramping up.
My new manager at Google did indeed tell me to enjoy my time until starting and that there is no expectation for me to ramp up beforehand, but also gave me a link which I appreciate because it helped me keep my own concern at bay. And getting that answer (i.e. enjoy your time, we got you once you start) might alleviate OPs concern a little, too...
You are smart enough to clear the Google interview, so you will be smart enough to take the new job. Also, Google rarely fires people unless you do sth. really bad.
My manager told me when I started at Google that they didn't expect me to be productive for the first six months. Everyone needs to learn a lot of new things there. You'll pick it up.
Thanks all for the assuring words. Glad to see I am not the only one facing such anxiety.
I'm in exact same boat starting at Google in a month coming from comfort zone. My take on this is as long as Google keeps me I'll learn a lot in company of smartest people on planet and when I'm let go I'll have job lined up because of Google brand name. It's a win win so relax and give it your best
Yes I will. Thanks. Good to see I am not alone going through this.
