Trying to move to SWE, been grinding LC and landing some interviews but the companies that seem the most willing to give me a chance are startups that will require long hours. I’ve been working my ass off for the past several years as a role thats 80% SW and 20% HW so I just want a life outside of work for a change. People want me for DevOps but I dont want to be in DevOps. Starting to think about quitting just so I can take some classes to learn common tech stacks. Also getting worn out because coming home from a job I hate and grinding LC is exhausting. Has anyone been in the same position? What did you do?
Why not join as DevOps and then switch internally
You should get a life. Some people wish they could work long hours but they can’t get hired to save their life.
Amen!
I may have been born more privileged than others or worked harder to be employable, or any number of other things. That doesn’t invalidate my desire to have enough time outside of work to see my loved ones and live in a fulfilling way
Dev-ops is a very underrated skill. Its tough, demanding and you will get to know the nitty gritty details of systems. Seriously take a dev ops role and then transition after a year
So I haven’t wanted to do DevOps because in general I’ve heard it’s less interesting, less fulfilling, and that you’re on the hook for fixing stuff immediately if it goes down - even if you’re on vacation and it’s 3 AM. If transferring internally is actually a possibility I would be happy to do so, but I just don’t want to look back after 5 years and think “huh, guess I was going to transfer at some point, wish I would have done that” which just seems like a really easy and unfortunate outcome to selecting a job I don’t want
* transferring internally after working DevOps
Where are you located and what kind of jobs have you been applying for?
Austin, TX applying for SWE roles from backend to full-stack
Also, how has the interview experience been so far?
I am in the exact same position. I don’t think devops and sre are good options imo. I am going to try and find a good swe positions with wlb and leetcode

Why a hard no on DevOps? And I’ve experienced the worn out factor. Is it possible for you to take a vacation at current job? Taking a week off(and not worrying about LC while off) can help clear out bad habits and reset your head space. Maybe see if you can do an internal transfer to a more SWE-centric role, or if you can have SWE as your job title. What do you currently do?
