Startups -how long to stay?

Are you expected to stay at a startup for 4 years? A startup is hesitant to give me an offer because they are not sure if I really love them and would be willing to stay for the next 4 years. Is this expected out of a startup?

The company is in SF.

    • Can you please elaborate? Why is it a red flag?

Because it's a ridiculously immature question they are asking. Are they promising to be in business for four years?

It's a job contract, so much can change in four years the question is stupid. As others have said just say yes if you want to make them happy, but expect a guilt trip if you ever try to leave.

Every company wants you to profess your undying love for them. Most people will leave in 2 years regardless. Everyone lies about their love for the mission of the company, so don't feel bad about doing it. Say what you need to get in the door.

Startups need people who get the mission but 4 years commitment is not normal

It’s an at will state so you can say yes and you can also leave at any point. However any potential options/stock/etc they grant most likely will have some sort of vesting schedule.

You’re realistically expected to leave within 1-2 years

It’s a weird thing to say to a candidate, but maybe you didn’t show enough interest in the product? And if that’s the case, what they’re saying is totally valid. It costs startups a lot of money to have to recruit and hire

Startups live or die on the passion and commitment of their employees. If you're not excited they won't want you.

If the startup does really well you'll be excited to stay 4 years. If not you can leave. But if you're not hoping to stick with them in the best case, ask yourself why not.
