I'm an L5 TPM (Technical Program Manager) at Amazon in Sunnyvale with a TC of 160k . I just received an offer from Google for a TPM position in mountain view with a TC of 200k. I have 5 years of industry experience as a TPM. Paths forward: 1. Ask Amazon to match. 2. Negotiate offer more with Google. What should I ask for in terms of TC? 3. Stay at Amazon and reject Google offer... #Amazon #Google #TPM #TechnicalProgramManager #compensation #comp
Best way to improve your offer is to get another offer. If you can’t do that, try to ask Amazon to match, but only as a means to help improve your Google offer. Then go to Google!
What is tc stands for?
Total compensation, which is salary + bonus + stock awards
At what level is Google offering this- L4? Are TPM salaries that much significantly lower than SWE salaries?
G over A for the same pay, wtf would you want to stay here for a lower or equal pay
That's low for an L5 TPM at Amazon... they pay more than 160k in Seattle... ask amazon to bump up your pay, if they don't budge, then leave. I'm curious, does Google pay only 200k for TPM's? Is it based off your current TC? they are not supposed to ask your current pay correct?
Feels a bit lowballed but I think it's still worthwhile to make the move
Amazon will never match a competing offer for a current employee. If they think you’re valuable enough or want to put in the effort, they may try and get a one time cash bonus to get your TC higher and then that will be your new base next year. It can be clawed back so IF they do that (which is rare) don’t leave within the next year or they can take it back. If you’ve already interviewed and entertained Google, just go. Amazon doesn’t like when people go out and get offers then come back as leverage, doesn’t go well.
Can you reference if this is from experience? How do you know that this is the case? Is it general across Amazon or a one case basis, and if it's a general Amazon thing, where did you get the data/info? I'm hesitant to leave as I work for a great manager and a great team, but I'm finding the pay disparity to be a bit concerning at this point....
Let’s just say I have personal experience twice. Once I went out and got another offer and they tried a dive and save, but I was already gone and the first time when I called out the fact that I was top tier in rating and out performing people two levels above in the same job they pulled a way late adjustment which was the one time bonus. Better than nothing but always way too reactive and it happens because the levels and base are too compressed. I’ve also dealt with it as a manager.
@OP : At what level is Google offering this TC ? L4 or L5?
Why isn't there option 4: take Google offer. Work 1 year. Come back to amazon one level higher.
Ex-Googler and current Amazonian here. Because speaking from personal experience and knowing other co workers who’ve gone through the same path as I did, once you go Google, it’s hard to go anywhere else due to their TC being too good. I took a cut in TC coming to Amazon but am planning to go back whenever I can. Only reason I left Google is because of a team misfit and Amazon offered the perfect role for me to level up my TPM experience.

What's a standard L5 TPM TC at Amazon in Bay area?
That seems about right. The general rule of thumb is TPMs are paid at a level below SDE 1 and it is top end of level 4 SDE
