Stay at Zillow or move to Square?

My current comp is ~220k at Zillow with 8 yoe, in a fairly specialized role. I got an offer from square for about ~380k. When I gave my notice, my manager told me they would make an exception to match my comp if I stayed at Zillow. I was really surprised by this and always assumed that was unattainable here. It would be really out of band for my role at Zillow.

My current wlb is really good, manager is good, the work could be a little better, and if feels like I haven't been learning or have pushed myself as much as I used to. Staying would result in a big jump in comp with little risk though.

At Square, I feel like there will be more room for growth, the company is doing better, I'll feel more challenged/motivated, it will look better on my resume, etc.

😂 Here’s a riddle for you. Under what circumstances can someone claim to have a literal zero chance of getting fired?

Person quit company but stays on blind to trash company. They need validation? A hug? Friends? Who knows. I left my last companys blind because like an adult, their problems aren't my problems anymore, and I knew I was becoming toxic and jaded and it's better to let people enjoy their jobs, even if I didn't.

    Now, your manager knows that
You want to move and not a loyal employee anymore. Even if you stay, sooner or later they will find replacement for you, and give a pink slip to you..

Doubtful he got an almost 2x offer any rational human would not see that as betrayal

Zillow hasnt matched the offer yet. It might match the offer and keep you stay until they find a replacement.

This is the stupidest idea ever. Managers are employees too, not company spokespeople. Any manager worth their salary knows you and they are not loyal to the company. Anywhere you go your company won't be loyal to you and you should never be loyal to them. They pay you for a service based on a contracted amount of comp to work. When that contract loses value you find something new, if they won't work with you internally you look externally. Welcome to life. A good manager knows this and their goal is to fight for you regardless of the company. You're an asset and if they see your unhappy they should fight to change that or help you grow and develop outside of the company. As a manager it's just a valuable to help you succeed regardless of where because who knows, in a few months they might be asking you for a referral.

Def out of band for L5. Unlikely offer from Square given 8 YOE and from that coming from Zillow imo.

@fitbit how much does L6 get paid at square? Do they beat FB?

E5 is going to pay more than L6 at Square. I think you're looking at 350ish-400 at offer. Our refreshers are below what FB does though and no yearly cash bonuses.

Very very hard to get promoted to L7 vs E5 to E6 (not saying that E5 to E6 isn't hard, but most L7s at Square are big in the open source community and/or do a lot of conventions. Essentially you have to do a lot outside of work and bring notoriety to Square on your own to be considered).

Thanks! I'm an inbred E5 making around $330k and was wondering if I should change because a lot of new hires get around $420k E5 offers. I love Square and very impressed by their growth. I thought they are very competitive compared to FB. Sounds like it's hard for them beat FB offer:/

To be honest Square doesn't beat FANG in offers. It traditionally relies on the stock growth in order to be competitive, which is now stagnant looking at the past year. I'd say Square is somewhere in the middle of Tier 2 companies.

If you're looking for TC I'd consider switching to maybe Snap/Pinterest/LinkedIn/Google/Lyft for a year or two then coming back to Facebook. I think that would reset you to market rate while not being underpaid.

I personally think that Squares growth is slowing and you can find more interesting work elsewhere if you want to move fast. Square moves very slow internally.

Take the extra comp, enjoy the wlb, take the $ and invest in hobbies etc. build a revenue stream outside of work.
