I have a group of 11 that I manage, tc ~$160k in Roche. I have an offer to be a chief scientific officer of a 20 person startup Contract research org (CRO). They are offering tc ~210k and 4% equity. The catch is that they are located in buffalo NY. I think this place could sell for 5-9 mil someday in the future, which would make the equity worth maybe 100k if you discount for the probability of an exit. What do you blinders think? Stay with the big safe company in the warm weather or chase a title and comp in a low-cost area (nice houses are 160k) with horrible weather?
How did you estimate the exit value?
4% equity on a 5m buyout with 50% chance of actually happening
Right. How did you estimate that an exit would be about 5m?
How many years experience? If your experience can get your old job back, then why not go to Niagara falls?
9 years experience, if you count PhD and postdoc as experience then 16. I’m not sure the old job would be there for me to come back to in a year or so frankly
My friend did study abroad in buffalo, said the city was super boring and every friend who visit will want to do trip to Niagara Falls

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
I think you should ask your wife
I asked her too, of course
Wise answer.
