Stay or change team

Questions for people on amazon who are managers or with similar situations. I am in L5 in the same team for almost 5 years now never had promotion. I ask but it seems upper management thinks otherwise. I am starting to lose motivation and tired. My manager said might need another project to prove the impact or have different people to review, but I don’t know if it will take 6 months or years. I am starting to think switching teams because I start to feel tiring out. But it will be totally different skill sets. My question is, if I can prove my self in the new team, is it possibly to get promoted in the new team but use some old team managers as reviewer within 6 months?Or if I switch to new teams, I will have to find the reviewer that’s “all” from new team. So if I need 4 different management review, then It will probably take more than 2 years I guess. Really need serious feedback. Thanks in advance. If helps, this is specific to Bay Area teams.

Why not somewhere else.. looks like your team/ Amazon doesn't value your contribution

Switch jobs

I’m in the same boat. I’m convinced after watching what other people do that switching jobs is the best option. Whatever the reason is, you’ve hit some sort of glass ceiling at the company/team you are working at.

Did you completed your promo doc? I’m pretty sure you must have concrete feedback. If not change team ASAP.

Will manager tell you when he starts your doc? If so then no, I don’t think it was even started. We actually talked about it many years already and there was one year that I thought it was really close but then manager told me he asked around first and was told I M not ready. And that’s when i start to feel it’s hopeless. But then I m on leave and too busy with family stuff for a while so i told myself it’s okay. But it’s been a while after I come back and I still don’t see things improve even though I think I am picking up more now. Anyways, guess part of me don’t want to give up all the time I spent here though the answer should be clear.

What? Since when?

Amazon AtRf74 OP Jun 18, 2018

To some people reply earlier, changing company is actually my long term goal now, but I have never done leetcode, and with family, I will need a long time to prepare. Like at least 6 months - 1 year. That’s why I am thinking should I stay in current team with expectation slow growth but more time to prepare or move on to new team new challenges then maybe stay if seeing opportunities or leave when i m ready.

If you think your bar matches or close to L6 then stay. Any FTE who holds non-blue badge is treated asset generally and once moved to L6 you would do extraordinary in TC from others. I’m pretty sure you would have competitive TC as of now too. Figure out short comings and work on them strategically , treat it as fun not like a job you will realize it’s not that boring. Slow growth is a relative term. Even if you change and get senior title in non FANG, would you be happy? If title is everything for you change today.

Amazon AtRf74 OP Jun 18, 2018

Sorry what’s FTE? I think I am close to L6 if not matches. I don’t just want the title but also the TC increase. That’s the major reason actually. I actually did well on my first two years so I have to admit I am quite satisfied with my current year even next year compensation. But due to my absence last year(my assumption that it’s taken into account of performance, I don’t know if it’s true though) I screwed up my the year after next year. If I don’t work on promo, I am afraid that my tc will probably close to new grad..
