Hi All, I’m currently in my first post-grad job and am finding how to get that “strongly exceed expectations within role” review elusive. My manager has walked me through my development plan, but it definitely seems generic and get-promoted- in-2-year-plan rather than in 1 year that I am looking for. Here are some of the general skills my manager listed which I am learning more concretely by talking to people at the next level. 1) Leadership skills 2) High business impact + visibility 3) Managing Challenges 4) Navigating Cross Functional Relationships I was wondering if you guys could share some of the strategies that has worked for you to fast track getting a promotion every yr.
What is your role?
Every year is a stretch. Every 2-3 years is possible depending on the company and their structure but you’d have to reinvent the wheel for this to happen so often. I’ve seen it happen in startups more frequently than established companies. But if you really want to move up quickly, a little ass kissing and getting involved in other teams projects to show your eagerness will definitely expedite the promotions. You may/will be hated by your peers but they don’t pay your bills. Not trying to be funny but I see it every... single........day.

You need a sponsor who will guide and advocate for you from within. Nothing else works as well. And no, mentors are not always sponsors
1) Be smart 2) Be a borderline asshole to be able to win the rat race with the type As 3) Have a support mentor/manager who will bat for you and who will also keep growing 4) Be lucky as shit
