Would you be considered as a failed software engineer if you don't work for one of the following: Google, Fb, Netflix, Amazon, Uber, Microsoft. I mean they are the top 5/6. If you didn't make it there it's almost as if you failed/didn't reach the top. P.S : For any comparison in comments consider people at same level as you in these companies. Please don't mention my team is great, my work is more impactful etc.
Should I remove Amazon from the list?
Not sure about others but from what I have seen with the teams I worked in, Amazon works as a startup with unlimited resources. You can learn and create cool stuff and not have to worry about being fired if it failed. Obviously depends on the team though.
So is that a yes or no?
Some people aren’t after the almighty FAANG TC AND PRESTIGE. Some people just want to earn a really good living on 40 hours a week in a low or medium COL area and retire comfortably in their 50s. Since I work at intel, I’m after neither obviously.
This poll is kinda directed towards ambitious folks.
Nah dude, don't worry about what anyone else thinks, especially people in the bay area. Just try to find happiness. There's more to life than work, and as anyone in the rest of the world will tell you no-one gives a shit what you do for a living.
Thanks, but I already work for Google. This post is to see what others think.
I had offers from uber and Microsoft but chose to come to airbnb instead. Perks, pay, culture and hiring bar are all significantly better here. I'm happy and would make the same decision again :)
Read the PS section, again.
Not sure what you're getting at. I didn't mention any of the things in your PS. No one at Microsoft or Uber (or Amazon for that matter) with my yoe makes more than me at airbnb. TC is king.
I would feel like a failure if I was at Cisco - we had great talent, they all just quit like me
I am moving from tech to Wall Street. I am a new grad with some olympiads background. I turned down a Google offer for a financial company. I am not saying the financial company is better. But sometimes people go away from FANG by choice. Please stop thinking that FANG is what every software guys want. TC can be higher in other industries. Also, my interviewers seemed to be smarter than my interviewers in FANG. The hiring bar necessarily goes down when you make a few mistakes in your hiring process. This is much more likely to happen with bigger companies. So FANG are not the most selective. Google is probably one of the best company you can get in software. But getting into it does not mean you made it to the top. There is actually no top, just stop feeling insecure and know what you worth independently of where you work.
This is a stupid post. There are plenty of smart people who work at large companies that you didn't mention, and there are lots of mediocre people at the companies you did mention
Amazon sucks honestly . I turned down an amazon offer because I know 1 manager and 6 friends that churned through it . Prestige isn’t worth sacrificing happiness .
Much of the great software is written by people who doesn’t work in those companies
No way. It depends what your goals are, if it’s just TC, there are ways to be rich other than working for above companies. If it’s learning as much as you can — you can do that a lot of places. A rapidly growing startup will expose you first hand to complex system design problems. If you just want to be able to solve algorithms just go on leetcode. What are the goals for this poll?
Imagine you're a new grad swe at FB/G vs a startup. Now list down pros and cons. I'm sure no one will let you design a complex system as a new grad. Now imagine you're at senior engineer at FB/G vs equivalent role in a startup.
