Got an offer from Spotify Sweden for 57K SEK / month with 6 YOE.
Try to negotiate with HR, it seems they are quite strict about the offer.
It slightly lower from what I earn (58K SEK), but considering the 6 months **full paid** maternity leave, it definitely can compensate the gap.
Also considering company brand, maybe it will also a good investment in resume wise (?).

Take it or leave it?

I am shocked too and this makes me really sad.
I was thinking of moving back to Sweden at some point to start family but if salaries are this depressed, I’ll think twice about it.

My current TC in the bay of $300k would get slashed by 70%...

Join Spotify in US, travel to Sweden few times a year, let company pay for travel. Get all that Scandinavian kink out of your system and then quit Spotify.

Are there a lot of fun things to do in Sweden? Kinda got the impression you guys have to mostly stay indoors since its so cold.

It is fun to visit. You will enjoy the food. Just stay away from traditional swedish food (meatballs etc). Great fish, very high quality and authentic ethnic food of all kinds (surprising, I know). Stockholm is nice to visit (good amount to see: views, museums, buildings). Try to go in warmer weather ofcourse to make the best of it.

Well, not much fun activity during winter except winter sports. Most people visiting each other house and dinner during the winter.

So that would translate to $75k a year before tax?

This might be the going rate in Stockholm but wow, that’s low compared to CoL.

So I checked your link. It’s about 43K median for somebody working in manufacturing.
But yes, I get you point. It’s not a lot.

The median salary is 290 261 SEK across Sweden. 339 738 SEK in Stockholm.

That is: $37K in Stockholm and $32K nation wide.

The numbers you are looking at is for people with +10 years experience.

How do you guys afford living there with these kinds of wages especially after taxes? Do people never eat out and only buy bare necessities? Also heard in Europe you guys love to travel, but how can you do so on those wages unless you only stay at hostels or go to third world cheap destinations?

Dude I have no fucking idea. I just moved back to Sweden from NYC and noticed how much prices for everything has gone up, not cheaper than US... I hardly want to pay for a coffee now.

Rents and gas prices here have gone up insanely too.

      Honestly this is nuts.
I guess you kind of have to move back after reaching exec level or you’ll be underpaid dramatically compared to CoL.

That's what is about average for Spotify Stockholm, and is competitive-ish in the market. Same is true in NYC, decently competitive to local market. HR is making steps to improve compensation at most tech levels to be at a higher competitive point

Hard to say, I think in a couple years time it will be a very solid point. What you learn while here depends on what mission and squad you're on. Some are working on very impactful eng works, while others wouldn't help you level up much. But it's also self driven in that regards

Does SDK count as "core" tribe? personally I didn't hear too much Spotify SDK before the interview.

The problem in Stockholm is that there is such a shortage in housing that it’s almost impossible to get a flat unless you’ve been in a queue for 20 years or you buy your own place.

If those are not options, then you’ll have to go sublet under the table and those rents run you way past 10k.

The 6 months in Sweden is not a spotify perk, that’s a country perk. Parents also get a total of 18 months combined. How you and your SO break that up is up to you.

6 months parental leave with full pay is a global Spotify benefit. Parents in Sweden get up to 18 months parental leave with some pay, but nowhere near full pay (unless your employer ponies up the delta which Spotify does for 6 months).

Interesting, that wasn’t my understanding. Thanks for clarifying, I only thought it was a “perk” in the states for obvious reasons. I didn’t know that Spotify had to add more money into the equation in STO.

Just move to USA, there are tech companies that also have 6 month maternity leave like Salesforce and will offer you at least three times the TC with less taxes.
