Sweet spot between creative and PM?

Just starting out my career, and I'm wondering what kind of roles to look for that ride in the seam between creative and PMs. Historically, I've thrived in jobs that offered lots of opportunities for ideation and brainstorming, but have enjoyed seeing it applied strategically. (Background in experiential marketing, MA in Emerging Media)

This is vague, I know-- just not sure what niche to target or how to market my skills. Any thoughts?

  • Work for a small size design agency. Loads of fun projects with emerging technologies and you'll get to do exactly what you described (it's what I did).

Thanks, that's great advice. Some of the roles at bigger places are so overwhelmingly specialized! Looking for a place to learn, grow, and try a bunch of new things.

Go small and test the water. I was in the same boat and after a public relations internship (account side), several marketing internships and then a 2 year creative portfolio program, I landed a jr art director job at an advertising agency. Creative is much more competitive bc you need a fully polished portfolio of your work... spec work, so stuff you completely make up on your own. However the small shops appreciate the hidden talents. My agency currently doesn't have PM roles, just creative and account management. So I do my own project management, & we all pitch it wherever is needed. I enjoy the all hands on deck office environment. Big shops definitely have their perks, but from my understanding, wearing multiple hats is not one of them.

I am a UX designer who also runs product management. I work at a very small start up company, which creates the opportunity for one person to do both

How did you know this was the one to go for? The risk w/ early stage startups is a little off-putting for me

the role was designed specifically for me so i joined for the role and what I would learn. Risk depends on your situation and your goals. My goal was to join a company that I would learn at.

Marketing Manager for a medium sized company that manufactures physical products. Great balance of creativity and marketing prowess needed to successfully launch products, but with elements of project management to help see the product toward launch due to less robust product development resources.
