I am a firmware developer who has mostly worked on C/C++ for close to 7 years. Lately I don't feel interested in dealing with HW anymore - partly lack of interest and lack of WLB in hardware jobs. I am thinking of doing some Java courses (as it's close to C++ and thus easier to learn). But my worry is if any company would hire me as a junior developer or something else. Don't care about money at that point. Any advise would be appreciated. PS also suggest some legit online Java courses that look good on resume Thanks.
It sounds like you are going to sell yourself short. Good Cpp skills are actually desired. My recommendation is to look for software jobs that utilizes cpp or Java, there are a lot of high level software that requires efficiency, think banks, bitcoin, Unity, unreal engine, computer vision, etc...
Thanks for the reply
I agree with Feetcode My primary language is Cpp and I actually view it has a benefit even though it does limit me from some jobs. There are plenty of jobs for compiler engineers with Cpp. Think of it this way, higher level languages abstract away stuff, so if you have a lower level language locked down, higher level languages will come easier to you. Just my two cents.
Trouble with c/c++ jobs is that they require domain specific knowledge. So if you're tired of firmware and want to switch to, say game dev, you'll need to learn a few of: algebra, spatial geometry, shading and rendering algos, game physics, AI and game theory. Maybe you could look to enter a new field in a tools team which will be more generic programming. But even there you might need Qt, OpenGL or fuck knows what libraries they use.
