Do companies like Citadel / Two Sigma consider ML engineers with a few experience for quantitative researcher roles, or do they mostly prefer fresh-out-of-school candidates? How hard is it to transition from tech into quant finance? I recently graduated with a PhD in a quantitative field from a top-tier school, and am considering gaining ML experience in a startup and then going into quant finance a few years down the road if I'm still interested. I just don't want any doors to close if I choose Tech now (mostly to learn) vs going to quant firms directly (for higher salary). Thanks!
Won’t you get higher salary in tech after a while that beats quants?
I joined blind to figure out that exact thing, and I’d say all signs point to no. I can’t speak for all firms, of course, and tech has the lottery aspect that is generally missing from quant finance, but at least where I am, unlucky quants get paid at the top range of what I’m seeing here for same YoE and lucky quants make a lot more.

I’ve seen people get quant positions coming from tech. It’s less common than coming fresh from a PhD or a postdoc but not unheard of. When it comes to it, use a recruiter who can spin things the right way.
